I am looking to purchase a Yanmar tractor. I have three disposable lawn tractors and do not wish to have another, so I am looking for a small tractor. I currently use a six foot finishing mower that I use behind a large tractor for most of the area (5 acres) that needs to be cut, but would like something small around the house. Which Yanmar would be just large enough because I have a concern with septic system and don't want to fall in? Thanks John

ku4ns,
a 1610-D works real nice for mowing and working around the house, being a diesel will last you a long time too.

I have to agree with Ernie....The 1610D, for it's size and power, is probably the last tractor you will need for the description of duties you have outlined.

By itself, it is capable of any 4' implement operation, and with the shuttle shift and 4X4 it is a great small tractor with FEL. And parts - just a phone call away.

Regards, Mark.

Does this tractor have a live pto or do I need an adapter?

ku4ns,

I know that Ernie and Mark have responded and I value their knowledge and information, but you are in a similar situation that I was in about 3 years ago.

We purchased a house on 6.5 acres and I knew that I could not mow everything with my 42" lawnmower. I looked around for used equipment. I also knew that my budget was very limited and that Yanmar made quality tractors because the JD 850 we had when I was growing up had a Yanmar engine.

I see that you live in Alabama, but you need to figure out what you will use the tractor for. The two main things I use my 1700 (2WD) for is mowing about 4-4.5 acres and keeping up about 400' of gravel driveway. I was not going to install a front end loader and my property is not very hilly. I have some "rolling" property, but not enough to constitute a 4WD. I use a 5' finish mower and a 5' scrape blade. It does everything I need it to do and I don't have to worry about maintenance or problems with the 4WD. I have approximately $3,100 tied up in the tractor and attachments (got some deals on attachments!).

Sorry for the long post, but just my .02.

Thank you for your reply. I have a large tractor for most of the heavy work, but would like the small tractor for cutting grass around the house and for small garden work. I use the big tractor (Kubota M5700) for the plowing, harrowing, but the small tractor would be easier to use after the garden (0.5 acre) has started. I'm also thinking of using the small tractor to run a pto generator for backup power. I had rather use an inexpensive tractor for this use rather than the big expensive one. John

ku4ns,

It sounds like a 2WD unit would work fine and not have to worry about the extra expense or maintenance of a 4WD unit.

There have been some threads on this site (can't remember which forum) about PTO generators. Do you currently own this generator or are you going to purchase? Just make sure that you get a tractor with enough PTO HP to run it.

Again; just my .02.

I don't currently own a PTO generator, but for the ones I looked at near 20 hp on the PTO should be at full load. Most of the time a backup generator is only running lights or other low current devices (at my house). I have to put in the disclaimer because i'm others would argue that point. Are parts easily purchased for most Yanmar models?

ku4ns,

Most parts are available from several dealers that post here as well, but make sure that you are comfortable about working on the tractor yourself. Many dealers will not even talk to you about the non US made Yanmars.

Make sure that you do not purchase an "orphan" Yanmar. From reading the posts here; there are several models floating around where parts are hard to find or not available. If you do a search on the Yanmar forum for "orphan"; you will find several posts about some models to look out for. If you have a particular model in mind; you could do a search on this forum for that model as well.

I have a 1700 which is (hope I am right) about 20 engine HP and about 17 PTO HP. If you do a search for "1700"; you will get pages of threads that have been posted. Hope this helps a little bit.

Hey Ku4ns, where in al are you? I found a tractor dealer in my area that said he would make any repairs to the tractor that I didn't won't to make, provided we can get the parts.I think the tractors that your looking at will require an over run clutch(if this is what your asking) to bush hog.
