I just purchased my 1700D, and am not sure what size brush cutter I can run (4'?) and also if there are any particular brands which fit or if they are all interchangeable. Thanks!

A 4 footer would actually be the best fit for your 1700. Not only because of power but also because of the 3 point weight. I run an old heavy 5' FMC Sidewinder on my 2002D. It is actually a little big for it but most of my mowing is not that heavy so I get by with it and cover more ground. Most any brand should hitch up ok but do have in mind there are some heavier duty than others. Some have stump jumpers, etc. I am sure there are some 4' category 0 mowers but you would be looking for a category 1 3 point.

How about a Land Pride RCR1548?
After reading the specs on it I would say it is a quality mower. Looks like it comes with a slip clutch and stump jumper. Weighs in at about 425#. That is plenty to be bouncing around on the back of a 1700. Realize this, I am no mower guru and just an old red neck giving an opinion. :thumbsup:

I would suggest you buy a 4 foot cutter, too. Make sure you buy an overrunning clutch if your tractor doesn't have one already.

What I want is the right mower for this tractor, regardless of what I may purchase in the future. If the mower is too big, I can't imagine that would be good for it. While there are nice 5' mowers available, I will stick to a 4 footer.

I bought a 4' BH earlier this Yr. for my YM2000 and IMO. it's just the right size for my needs. It's older Heavy,Well built and works great. And easy on the tractor. But I've been using a 5' FM. for yrs. and it handles it great.I did add some front balast weight just for the piece of mind when having to lift it. Having 4wd. and extra front weight will be a big plus for you

Like the others have stated, A 4 ft'r is best suited for the 1700, remember your tractors HP is rated at the pto,
The larger the cutter equals more of the engines HP needing to be used at the pto, actually I have been in places ( thick/tall grass ) using my 4ft cutter will bog the engine requiring me to rev it on up beyond its red-line,
in other words you'll find times that even with a 4 ft cutter will give the tractor a workout, much less having use a larger 5ft. cutter,
When the grass is tall or thick, I have learn to cut 2/3rd pathway at a time, this helps to keep the RPM's up on the engine and cutter as well as ground speed,
One more thing , It's likely that you'll need to cut the drive shafts down to prevent binding,

Thanks for all the info everyone. I struck out on the Land Pride 4' brush cutter. Another case of a seller not removing the listing after selling it- one of my pet peeves about Craigslist. Will continue to look around and see what I can find!
