Tractor
1998 JD 4400
Hi All,

Well this board has been so helpful as I narrowed down which tractor to buy, now it's time to figure out which lawn mower to buy.

Consider this a factor.. I have a 10% discount (expires 2/16/06) up to 10k at Lowes (excluding John Deere products).... I'm looking at a minimum of a 42" cut. I'd like to go for 48"+.
there are a few obstacles in the yard and it is rolling hills. I was looking at the Husqvarna's, trying to find out if they are a quality product.

Since I bought a JD 4120 I'm not shying away from the green paint, I just want to get the biggest bang for my buck. I also know sears is discounting thier mowers right mow too.

I appreciate the help in advance... I really want to here about your experiences!

Thanks,
Lee

I would not recommend buying any lawn mower from a Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, etc. Those type of stores only offer the lowest quality models of the brands they sell.

is it really worth the 40% more in cost to buy the high end mower from say a John Deere dealer?

How long do these mowers really last?

There's not a price difference at all, much less 40%.

The same models are the same price at Lowes as they are at a John Deere dealer -- that's why they exclude the JD equipment from their sales...

However, the dealer offers many more models than the box stores -- they only offer the entry models...

I was using a comparison from the entry level models (Lowes) to the ones one step above them.

Like always... it's how much you want to spend and what you want to do with it. Generally speaking... you get what you pay for. That being said... I've seen countless old "cheap" mowers that have years and years of use with little or no trouble. I wouldn't rule out any particular brand. Two acres is quite a bit to mow with a riding mower so I would think a 50" or bigger deck would be in order.

I bought a Husky 25hp aboaut 2 years ago and have been very happy with its performance. It has a 48" deck and I mow 2.5 acres of hilly land with it. If you get a deck much larger than 48" I 've found you end up with skelping of the lawn.

I have a 52" deck on my current 2 acres. It is barely enough. I sure wouldn't want something smaller. Before I learned that the 72" MMM setup on my Kubota wasn't going to work with the BH90 backhoe frame, I was pretty stoked about being able to mow the open areas with that. Now the MMM is for sale and I am keeping my eyes open for a rear finish mower. In my other post on mowing hills, I noted that I traverse my slope with my garden tractor. When this low-end Murray's transaxle went out, I borrowed a friend JD110 to do the job - it couldn't do it. Wider is better. I personally am also a fan of a gear rider.

I mowed my 2.33 acres with a 38'' mower from 1966 to 1995.
1n 1995 I got a tractor with A 46" deck. Made a big difference.
I now have a 60'' deck. A real big difference owver the 38'' deck.
Scalping has not been a problem with the 60 incher.
Some times my wife and I both mow together. The 9 foot wide swath makes short work mowing the 2.33 acres.

I have 2 Bolens tractors and a Kubota plus a Box store Lawn tractor. There is no comparison between it and the Bolens / Kubota.
The Box store tractor is one of the worst buys I've ever made.
