Fellow Posters,

I deliberated extensively to decide in which forum to place this question. The ATV/UTV forum did not seem quite right; the JD forum did not either--so here we are. This is a bit of a general question, so it seems to best belong here. As we know, there have been many posts recently about diesel engines and comparisons between them and gasoline engines. These questions have been related mainly to tractors, but I have one about Gators. As some of you know JD just released its Gator XUV UTV. It is a nice machine and my dealer just received four of them in. I have dibbs on whichever one I want and can afford. The gasoline Gator has 23 horsepower and is fuel injected. My dealer feels he can tune and eek out a couple more ponies. It has a peak torque of around 33 lb. ft. and a CVT. The diesel Gator has a 25 hp Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel and has a peak torque of 38 lb. ft. The cost difference is $1000.00. Is the diesel worth it for regular use--i.e., hauling, pulling and zipping around the property? The more specific question is would the diesel offer significant performance differences in a machine that uses a CVT??? We have discussed concepts such as power under curve, and I concur that a diesel makes more torque below peak than does a gasoline engine, which has a "sweet spot" in the power band. But, with a CVT this to a large degree seems nullified, as the gasoline engine could be in the sweet spot more easily and regularly than with a standard tranny. My dealer says he feels the gas engine would perform as well, but I am mostly interested to hear what the panel thinks about the engine choices when a CVT transmission is involved. Thanks for the input.

It's all about torque, and diesels ALWAYS win hands down. Second, you will get your money back on resale. And lastly, who doesn't love the smell of diesel in the morning....

I faced this same dilema for the past 5 months. I was just about ready to buy an HPX last fall. I was leaning towards the diesel. After I heard about the XUV, I decided to wait for them. I ordered my 620i gas model Tuesday. It should be here next week.

Diesel pro's:
I could use the same fuel for the tractor and Gator.
Better mileage using diesel compared to the old carb model.
The diesel fuel is far safer to store and handle.
On paper, there is more torque.
In 2006, the diesels were readily available and only $1000 more. 2007 availability????

Gas 620i pro's:
Save $1000 up front
Gas looks like it will be $0.25-$0.45 cheaper than diesel fuel for a long time.
No worries about the new diesel fuel on a new engine.
Fuel injection will give far better mileage than a carb.
Instant throttle response. No need to try to maintain the RPM's in a narrow band.
Better cold starting.
No diesel fumes when running next to the house.

I will use my XUV year round. The main difference boiled down to the fuel injection. Cars have had it for years and they start easily and are very fuel efficient. Throttle response is instantaneous. Diesels will give you more lower end torque, but they don't like the throttle setting being constantly changed.
If it had remained a diesel vs carb battle, the diesel would have won in 2007. But fuel injection chnaged all that. Technology won.

I will still be hauling fuel for it in 5 gallon cans either way. I don't use enough of gas or diesel to justify trying to maintain a storage barrel of either one at home. I spend $100+ weekly on auto gas, so I am at a station at least three times per week. Getting gas cans filled is no bother. I have done it for years for the boats we owned.

As far as the dealer tweaking the gas engine, he might have the technical ability to do that. Chances are, the real HP increase will come when someone in the aftermarket introduces a replacement chip or programmable chip for it. That is when you might see claims of 5-8HP gains and 40MPH from the aftermarket guys. It seems as though it might be easier to write computer code than to port and polish and install a new cam.

If you want to see the gas model in a real life situation, contact me in 2 weeks. 1.5 mile dirt road, hills, hauling firewood, trails in the woods. There will be no mudding demo.

I also went with the gas model for most of the same reasons that gordon21 states. I understand the advantages the diesel may have in certain situations but for how we use our HPX there wasn't a justification for the extra money. I just wish our '06 had EFI! :)

I was theorizing that with a CVT, the diesel's torque advantage would be nullified to some degree as the CVT tends to keep an engine in its desired RPM range, which to me would make a lower power engine perform like a more-powerful one. Thus, if a gasoline engine has a narrow power or torque band v. a diesel, the one way one could eliminate that would be to keep it in a narrow operating RPM, which the CVT theoretically does. Is this correct?

At my previous job (college) I had the opportunity to operate both a gasoline powered unit and a diesel powered unit. Both operated flawlessly, but I found the diesel model to be noisy and the exhaust was much less appealing. They both pulled fine, with the diesel pulling a little harder but the gasoline model was faster.

All of that being said, and with off-road diesel being tax exempt here, the fuel costs would be pretty close.

The diesel model was tough to start on some winter mornings (and I'm in Louisiana).

I'd go with the gasoline model if I could buy one tomorrow (and believe me, I would!).

BC,

I agree. Yesterday I had the chance to drive both. I have owned both a diesel and a gasoline HPX and I will say the gasoline model in that machine did not seem as strong nor run as well to me. This time, different. The gas is fast and pulls great. It is also much more quiet than the diesel model and I think I will go with that one. Thanks to you and others for the thoughts.

The diesel was hard to start? I am thinking of trading my 05 HPX 4*4 gas in on a new XUV 850D due to being cold natured....maybe I need to rethink it.
