Ok, I know this question has been beaten to death on the forums, but from all I've read I've been unable to figure out whether to run on "off-road" diesel or "road" diesel with my '07 ck20s, with the "off-road" being 40c cheaper locally.

My manual gives very detailed parameters on the diesel recommended. The most important number for selecting "off-road" vs. "on-road" is probably the sulfur, by weight %. It gives a max of 0.50. Since it's stated as a max, I'm assuming low and ultra-low sulfur diesel is ok in this tractor.

That said, I bet the stuff is the same except for the dye and the road tax... so go for the cheaper one? Your input?

Thanks.

Outside of marine fuel oil. I do 't know of any #2 fuel oil/ furnace oil/#2 diesel that is 't 15ppm sulphur.
After putting it in print here. You are on the government short list for a road side check.
Are you familiar with the fines for using off road diesel on a road?
I wonder just how many diesel pickups run the roads with off road fuel?

Go with the cheaper off road fuel.
My DK 35 has used nothing but off road fuel for the past 13 years.
I've run the older high sulfur off road fuel and the newer low sulfur off road fuel.
I can't say I noticed any difference. Runs fine with either.

I haven't gotten that far into the owners manual on my DK 40 yet. After switching to coal for home heat 10 years ago, We were left with a couple hundred gallons of heating oil. So I put a line on the tank and started mixing it with the off road fuel we were running in my JD and eventually started running it straight. I didn't experience any ill effects to the tractor and hope that its ok to run the off road fuel in the DK as well as I still have a hundred gallons in the tank as I have been using it as a mini fuel station. A small 12v pump is plumbed into the line and it is powerd by the tractor battery at fill up time.

Add some Power service white jug to that. About 2 glugs per 5 gal.

If it is new fuel and not left over from someones home heating oil tank, all the diesel that you buy today is going to be ultra low sulfur fuel. The one with red dye has no road tax on it while the clear is taxed. That is the only difference in the fuel and your tractor will run the same on either one, only your wallet will know the difference.
I am always amazed at the posts here about what fuel to use in their tractors especially since there is only one type that a consumer can buy legally and that is ULSD, taxed (red) or untaxed (clear).
I think ships and locomotives can still used higher sulfur content fuel but that would not be available to the general public.

What is in the tank right now is a mix of off road and on with what ever remnants of home heating oil that might be left over. When the tank got down to 1/4 full I started adding fuel to it when ever I got a good buy on any fuel so it has been added to and mixed but never actually run down to empty. My JD has run fine on it and still does so I would suspect that it will run fine in the new machine as well.

I also have let the little pump run for extended periods of time every now and again just to circulate the fuel back around. Don't know if that helps any or not but I felt and still feel better knowing it didn't just sit still in the tank for months on end.
