Community,

I need help to identify a replacement coolant for my 5220R.

The manual calls for a D4985 compatible coolant, however the governing body recommended in 2016 to mark this coolant as obsolete and discontinued. They claim it addition of SCAs causes it to have a very high silicate level.

They state that all OEMs, except Catapillar, had removed it from their documentation. Cat agreed to remove it from their manuals too. Cummins nolonger recommendation a SCA precharges coolant.

Details can be found here:
Withdrawal of D4985-1(215) Standard Specification for Low Silicate Ethylene Glycol Base Engine Coolant for Heavy Duty Engines Requiring a Pre-Charge of Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA)

I know I use Rotella HD coolant in my diesel truck in a 50/50 mix. The stock coolant is green and the HD coolants are purple.

What have you used? I need to either top off my current coolant (20hrs) or drain and replace it all.

Looking for input on what I should use. Thanks

My manual for 4720H says to use KSM 2142 coolant...

Google found this when I looked: (Automotive Fluid)

I wonder if Branson updated their manual and I have an older version. Thanks, I’ll check out that specification. I see you are in OK, I am in Coweta.

Here is a picture from the 20/25 series Branson service manual. Hope it helps.

Thanks again. I continue to research and the KSM standard appears to be the European equivalent of ATSM.

I’m not finding an American option for KSM 2142, so I went to the Cummins website and looked at their recommendations. They suggest Fleetguard products.

I’ll keep searching, but I can’t help but wonder how old my manual is to have an ATSM listed coolant.

I'm going through a similar process at my place,
what I have found are three basic groups of engine coolants
1) the old conventional glycol type, usually green in color
2) OAT a newer style, Organic Acid Technology coolant
3) HOAT the newest style, Hybrid Organic Acid Technology

And then I find this;
Different colored antifreeze is used to identify the type of antifreeze being used. Inorganic Acid Technology (IAT) antifreeze is green in color. Organic Acid Technology (OAT) antifreeze is orange, red, green, pink or blue. Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT) antifreeze is orange or yellow in color.

I am not sure what is the best way to go, I have several vehicles and several types of anti-freeze it would be nice to find one that was approved and worked well for all of them.

What I have started doing was when I changed out something that required draining or adding a lot to a system was completely draining and blowing out the existing coolant, flushing with water and using air to blow out everything again a couple of times. Then I have started using Rotella ELC. I am still looking reading and wondering as to the best way to go and may well end up redoing every thing I have swapped over again.

I have seen contamination issues with mixing coolants twice now, once with a Dex Cool vehicle that got conventional, and once with a Dodge that we think had a OAT that got mixed with conventional. The DEX Cool required quite a bit of disassembly to get cleaned out and back in service. The Dodge "just" took several hours of flushing and circulating dish soap through the system to get cleaned up for a refill. The Dex Cool was a dozen years ago and the Dodge this year.

In conclusion flush repeatedly and well and install the product of your choice, green needs changing every couple of years the other colors every 4-5 years.

It is certainly more confusing than it used to be.

I purchased several cases of Peak Fleet Charge with SCA additives on close out at Advance Auto several months ago. This coolant is pink in color. To my knowledge this is just regular ethylene glycol green antifreeze (IAT) with SCA additives that gives it the pink color.

Years ago I used Wynn's SCA additive to my old 92 F250 Powerstroke and it was pink in color. So to my knowledge this coolant would be OK with any green or (IAT) type coolant.

I also read that you can mix up to no more than 25% of the types of coolant without compatibility issues. Whether or not this is true I have no idea.

I use 5 yr 50k mile, yellow bottle (Prestone) car coolant at 50-50. Since the same components are used why not. Only exception I can see would be if you had a sleeved diesel engine and drove it 500k miles on an overhaul, you'd want some sort of chemical neutralizer to prevent the little bubbles that form on the surface of the sleeves and erode them. JD made a fluid additive which they quit making a few years ago and my OTR Cummins had an Ionic filter cartridge in the water line. None of my current tractors are sleeved and I really doubt I'll live long enough to put the equivalent of 500k highway miles on them so I don't worry about it.

Wow, I think some people are over thinking this. I just went down to Walmart and got some of the super cheap SuperTech Antifreeze (regular ole ethylene glycol), cut it with 50% water, topped off my system and never looked back. I will be willing to bet it never causes a problem. If it was a GM car and it used the Orange DEX, I'd be a bit worried, but it isn't, so I'm not.
