We are looking for another piece of tractor jewelry. The gem needed is a brush hog. Does anyone have any "gems" of wisdom in choosing one? We are looking at a 5 foot hog and have inspected the King Kutter, Woods (sold by the Kubota dealer), Rhino, Frontier, and miscellaneous others in the catalogs.

heyhey,

Make sure the width of the rotary cutter will cover your tracks. A 5' hog will barely cover the tracks of a L3430. I don't think the 5 footer will cover your tracks if you decide to run your rear tires "dish out". You have pleanty of PTO HP to run a 6' rotary cutter...therefore I would suggest the 6'.

I would buy the highest quality cutter you can afford. Rotary cutters take a lot of abuse and there are a lot of difference between side wall thickness and gear box design. You can save a lot of money by going with a shear pin design rather than a slip clutch.

Keep us posted.

I have a 5ft Rhino that I got from my dad and it works great on my L3400.

Like others have said, a 5-footer will cover your tracks, barely, but the 3430's got enough power to easily handle a 6-footer if you not working cutting thickets of hardwood saplings. Pasture clipping or weedy/slightly brushy old fields are no problem for that size machine and a 6-foot medium duty rotary mower. If you plan to use it in the woods or tight trails, the 5-footer might be handier.

You don't say where you're from or what you intend to mow with it - if you did you could maybe narrow down the responses a bit. Either way, make sure to buy at least a medium duty unit that you can get parts for (that is, any name brand) and absolutely make sure it has a slip clutch instead of a shear pin.

Good luck. And let us know what you end up with. -WSJ

heyhey, you've probably got enough PTO hp to run a 6' but if it were me I'd stick with a five foot cutter.

I don't know the weight of your tractor or if you've got a loader on it, etc., but weight of the shredder could be an issue. You can get a good, medium duty 5' cutter and know that you can cut anything you can drive through. With a 6' cutter, yeah you can spin it, but it might be a bit big physically and maybe a little too much if you're cutting thick material.

But, that's just me.....

Well, there's your answer in the above posts. Five ft if you plan to take out saplings, some stumps a few big rocks and six ft if for grass and the like.
I have used both widths in both conditions and, if I were doing it today would buy a six ft and not try to bush-hog the world.

I'd go 6'.
I use a 5' unit behind a 24 PTO HP tractor. I'm going through some really thick stuff and the tractor rarely bogs down
Your Kubota has 27 PTO HP (if HST) or 29 (if gear), so it should be able to handle a 6 footer as long as you use a modicum of sense..
You can always slow down a bit if your tractor bogs down.

As far as a brand...I've got a Land Pride standard duty cutter that has taken a lot of abuse, so I can recommend Land Pride.

Customers that are pocket tight will buy the five foot. To think for a minute about fuel prices as much as the tractor might use more power some times you will find that the extra width helps cut trips! We have sold several L-3400 hydro's for clipping pastures with the Bush-hog SQ84 twin behind them and they have been a good match. Saves a lot of time!!!!!!
