Tractor
Kubota 5040 with FEL
Hey everyone,

I am thinking that by the end of the year I will be in the market for a backhoe attachment for my Kubota 5040 4x4 tractor. I would like to go with the biggest boom that my tractor can feasibly handle(deepest digging depth). I have a couple of old ponds that have silted in that I am wanting to dig back out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I called the dealer today and a 11' digging depth Kubota unit is $10k and a Rhino 9'6" digging depth is around $9k. Do these price seem right? I am probably more interested in the Kubtoa unit but was curious if the price sounds right?

It's not the answer you wanted, but for $9-10K you can buy a ford 555 with 1500-2500 hours. It would be 15' dig and a lot more powerful. Same sort of deal on other mfg equipment.

Of course, new is nicer...

just my $0.02

I really don't want to have another complete machine around the farm. I actually run a contracting co. and have access to backhoes during our slow times but I am wanting something that I can use when I need to but not have to maintain a whole nother machine. I'm going to more than likely look around some more and get some more prices on some other brands. If I could get the Kubota for around $8500-9000 then I would probably buy it but I don't know about $10k. Gonna have to think about that for a while because I don't know how much I will use it. Next year I am hoping to build a small cabin on the place and would likely use it quite a bit during that project. Thanks again.

Leeinmemphis,

If I had a 5040 and needed a backhow I'd get a used Case 580 series backhoe. It will hold it's value and do three times the work of an attachment. Whe you are finished with it you can sell it for almost what you paid for it. They have a big straong bucket and are so much more robust then any tractor attachment.

I have a rule of thumb. When I need a piece of equipment I look at what a professional uses. What a pro uses is a suitable tool. If a cheaper tool would do the job well then naturally the pro would be using the cheaper tool. They buy what is necessary. I'd rather have a used pro grade tool than a new tool that is less capable. The case 580 series is probably the most popular backhoe ever because it is so good.

If other TBN readers feel the same way or different please speak up. This should be good debate material.

JRP.....the main problem for me is that the use will be very intermittent. I am wanting an attachment that I can keep/use for many years to come. If I ever come up with a BIG project that demands alot backhoe work then I would likely either rent or borrow one for a few days/weeks etc.
