My mailbox is in a 2' x 2' brick pedestal. I want to glue some 4" numbers on each side. I know I could drill holes with a masonry bit, put in anchors, etc., but I'd rather not do that. So what would be the best adhesive to use?

I'd use silicone sealant, since I have some! It does stick to most everything. We use it to stick the non-porous lab tops to the benches, and you can lift the benchwork by those tops after it dries.

I'd try some kind of construction adhesive, like Liquid Nails.

liquid nails gets my vote.....thick and will hold in place while it sets...

we used to sell rockite at a local hardware store.....you could mix it thick too

gorilla glue or other urethane adhesive - but use it sparingly or it'll foam out around the edges.

My vote would be construction adhesive (there is one in a caulking tube specifically for bonding to brick but I do not remember the number) Silicone caulking will also work -- I personally would not use the Urethanes because they harden completely and may give way to material movement in temperature variation --and I have not found them to be a great bond on some plastics -- have not used them on metals much though -- JMHO

I've had my house numbers attached to a large rock at the end of my drive for the last 3 years. I just used a big glob of silicone caulk on each one and stuck it to the rock. It has worked well for the last 3 years.

Thanks, everyone. I'd forgotten about the liquid nails. The last time I used any of it was about 10 years ago. So I looked at their website and they showed two different ones that should work. So it was off to Home Depot, and as you might expect, they didn't have either of those two. They did have two types of liquid nails (probably would work, but not the ones I was looking for).

But then I saw a high priced tube, pressure dispensed, of Loctite Power Grab All Purpose Construction Adhesive that's labelled for both metal and brick (and nearly everything else:D) so I decided to give it a try. Now it says that the material must be at least 50 degrees, that it dries in 24 hours, shouldn't be allowed to freeze, etc. It's 52 out there now and forecast to be 31 tonight, so I guess I'll be waiting a few days before I give it a try. I'll be gluing eight 4" reflective plastic numbers onto brick.

I'm ashamed of you all! Someone wanted to stick something to something else and not a single one of you mentioned the proper tool for the job - duct tape! If women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. :D

Let us know how you like the Loctite, I hadn't heard that they had an adhesive like that but I'm sure it will be a welcome addition to their product family.

Dang, Jeff, and I already had a roll of duct tape on hand. Doesn't everyone? One of my brothers used to call it hundred mile an hour tape because he said that's what they used to patch the holes in the fabric of the old airplanes in Alaska.:D
