So I'm getting ready to set up my MMM (it's still shiny new in the shed). Most of what I will mow is field type stuff. I'm sure I will use it 90% of the time at it's highest setting.

Do you recommend that I even mess with setting the wheels at the max heigth, or should I set the wheels lower for the 10% of the time I will cut "nice grass"?

My first job is cutting the ditch area behind a buddy's house............. It will be UGLY.......

Appreciate any input. THKS.

Hmm....my $0.02 would be to not use a MMM finish mower to mow anything I'd refer to as "UGLY" /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif For the price of a low end rough cut mower... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Good Point.

There's a guide on the deck on where to set the wheels for cutting height. It's also in the manual.

When I cut taller grasses I just mow it the first time with the deck raised up and then mow it again at my mowing height which I think is 2.5 or 3".

No need to tear up a $1000+ finish mower on what a $600 rotary cutter can take care of what it's designed to handle.

Thks for the replies. I agree on using a finish mower to cut ugly stuff, but my CFO probably wouldn't spring for a bush hog now......

I do agree that would be the best approach.

THANKS.

After you make sure the rocks and or stumps and little kids are out of the field, I would set the mower as high as it would go, and mow it!. Make sure that your belts are not hitting anything when the mower is in the full up right position. If you mow with the adjustment in the "full upright and lock position"(guess that is called transport) you will loose some of if not all of the mower's ability to move upon impact.....in other words, it could get real ugly.....
My MMM will go thru small saplings and weeds with no prblem....just keep the blade sharp!

Your CFO might not go for a $600 mower to do the job at your buddies home, but is your buddy going to go for the repair bill if you hit something while cutting his ugly weeds and damage your tractor? Think that the CFO will take kindly to that scenario??? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif If something on your shinny new tractor gets damaged, how good of a buddy will he be then? I suggest that he rent a mower and do it himself. It might be less expensive for both of you and save a friendship in the end. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You got some good points Mr. Junkman..... I failed to mention that I'm doing this as a business, so I get paid. Plus, this mowing deal is in addition to doing some tilling and dirt work for him...........

I also have a twisted view of my equipment. Not that I want to abuse it, but I do want to wear it out--that's the way to make the cash register RING loudly.....

Having re-thunk some of this, I saw an ad for a used bush hog. I might have to go check on it while the CFO is out of town this weekend........... Maybe she won't notice, huh????????

THKS.

Am I dreaming? Or did I read in the manual that One is not supposed to operate the mower with the PTO engaged in a fully raised position?

Please correct me if I am incorrect.

I just double checked what I paid for my MMM last fall . . . .OUCH . .I thinK I have to second Junkman's advice. Buy a POS KK bushhog or pick up a used/abused brushog from someone else! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Just my .02

Have a good one,
Dave

RonR...... Please let me straighten you out...... DON'T EVER CALL ME MR. AGAIN!!!!!!! ROFLMAO /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Titles like that scare me!!! All joking aside, if you are doing this for money on some one else's land, make sure that you have liability insurance and lots of it. There is a thread where a fellow was brush hogging a neighbors lot and he picked up and threw a piece of steel that could have killed someone. Accidents happen all the time and that is why they are called accidents, but you definitely don't want to risk you entire life savings and your families future if a accident should happen and you don't have insurance to cover the damage. Tractors, cars, houses, and pets all have fixed values, but humans don't and that is where the problems lie. Watch any daytime TV program and you will see how many attorneys are competing for the liability claim business. They wouldn't be spending all that money if it didn't pay off. Believe me when I say that you don't want to cut the first blade of grass without having insurance and a lot of it. Good luck in your future endeavors with the tractor. Mr. Junkman /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif 2505 posts and I finally get the respect that I deserve, and from a man from Kansas, at that! Middle America recognizes me and Makes Me Proud.
