How exactly is a 24'x24' pole barn measured? Is it 24' from the outside of the pole on one side to the outside of the pole on the other side? Or, is it supposed to end up 24' after the skirting/siding is put on?

For what is the measurement to be used for? That will dictate where it is "supposed" to be measured. (IMO). Can you give us a hint? Tax assessor? Material list for siding? Footprint of building? Area inside building? ?????

Well, I guess from your list I would pick "Footprint of building". I just want it to come out as a "standard" size, so I can use standard material lengths, etc.

Outside corner to outside corner. Steel is dimensioned by coverage, so 8 sheets covering a wall will give 24 feet of wall coverage. If you were using 4 foot coverage material, it would be 6 sheets, 2 foot coverage material would be 12 sheets.

Beenthere is right ... this measurement depends entirely on what you are going to use it for ... if as in one post you are going to use dimensioned materials like sheet metal covering for the exterior then you want those exterior measurements to work out for the best cuts … interior normal spacing of 16 inch or 24 inch studding for plaster board makes for less cuts …. But most of the time in my limited experience, the exterior keeps to the “normal”, and the interior is adjusted … as for the treated Tax Accessor… best check with them … heated space is the area which will receive heat which is yet another measurement … and when you get into storage such as whare house that’s another world of measuring and IDing space … for most of what I think this web site would be concerned with I think the suggested “foot-print” is the one most folks would recognize and use ...

Careful - If you set your poles so that they are 24' outside corner to outside corner then you add 2X4 girts you will end up with 24' 3" of surface you need to cover with your sheathing/siding on two of your walls (or 24' 1 1/2" on all four walls) - not to mention that your standard length girts will run short.
How do I know? Been there, done that.

Franz - "Outside corner to outside corner". Do you mean with or without the skirting (or whatever you call the boards that are nailed to the outside of the poles for the metal to attach to)?

WVBill - "If you set your poles so that they are 24' outside corner to outside corner then you add 2X4 girts you will end up with 24' 3" of surface you need to cover with your sheathing/siding on two of your walls". OK, this part makes sense. But, you lost me on the part where you said "(or 24' 1 1/2" on all four walls)".

I think I have it now though. I need to set the poles 23' 9" apart outside to outside, so when I add the skirting (the boards the metal siding will nail to), then the dimensions from the outside of the skirting on one side to the outside of the skirting on the other side will be 24' even.

Yes this is exactly right Mosey. When your barn framed up and ready to put your tin on it should measure exactly what your plan dimensions are. The wall material is not included in any plans that I have seen where you are using tin.

... unless you use decorative corner boards. It's just never easy is it! I figure by the time I get around to building my barn you guys will have every detail worked out. Thanks ahead of time /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
