I'm still working on what is turning out to be a life-long project... getting my NAA into running condition. :) The person I bought it from had already converted it to 12V but I've been having intermittent charging problems. One min it charges fine (10-15 amps) the next minute the ammeter is completely pegged past 30 amps. I've installed new ammeter, coil, distributor cap, point, and ignition switch. It starts and runs fine.

The alternator that's on there now seems to have three wires coming out of it. I purchased a new 12V conversion kit is made for a Jubilee/NAA. The alternator that came with the new kit only has a single wire attachment. The problem is the diagram that came with the kit is worthless. It shows as if you are shorting out the battery on the binding post. I called where I bought it and they were no help.

Does anyone know where I can get a wiring diagram showing a single-wire alternator hookup? I can't believe I cannot figure this out. I mean, the charging circuit of these old tractors doesn't seem to get much simpler.

Any help would be appreciated! :)

charge wire from alt to one side of ammeter. other side of ammeter to hot connection on solenoid.

wire from alt side of amp meter to key switch, then to coil.

wire from alt side of amp meter to lamp switch them lamps

in other words, the key and lamps get their power from the same side of the amp meter the charge line is, and the other side of the amp meter ONLY has a wire tot he battery ( solenoid hot is battery ).

that's as EZ as it gets.

PS.. I like the 3 wire WAY better than 1 wire.

charge stud as above.

#1 wire to a 194 lamp, to the coil side of the key switch

#2 wire to the charge stud.

this holds true for delco 10 / 12 SI alternators with internal regulators.

Thanks!!! That does sound simple. What is it you like about the 3-wire alternators? I saw a note somewhere that the engine may need to be running fast to charge. Is there any difference between the 1-wire and 3-wire in their ability to charge at idle?

Soundguy's info is golden.

Lotsa alternator info on this website

High Output Alternator, 200-250-300-350 Amp Alternators, high output alternators, GM,Ford, Chrysler Dodge Alternators

My 1964 MF135 diesel has a 1-wire Delco 10si alternator. You need to rev the engine to about 1800 rpm to excite the alternator and get it to charge. Actually, that Delco has a small diameter pulley so at 1800 engine rpm, the alternator is probably spinning well over 2500 rpm.

Good deal. Do you know a good source for fan belts? I'm having trouble getting one to fit the NAA with the alternator. The ones I can get at the local auto parts dealer are the right length but the taper seems wrong allowing it go too deep in the pulleys making them impossible to tighten. I've called places like TSC and hardware stores and no one is much help.

Does the original generator belt fit? Unfortunately mine broke. I think the alternator belt needs to be a tad longer because of the smaller pulley.

i bet you have a mix of 1/2" and 5/8" pullies. a belt that sinks into the pulley is a 5/8 pulley and a half inch belt :)

to answer the question on charge rpm, as flusher said.. most 1 wire alternators need very high rpm to initially turn on.. once turned on they generally will stay turned on till rpm drops below about 500 rpm...

the 3 wire jobs generally start charging at 400 rpm or so.

alts charge much better at idle than generators do.

pulley size, as noted effects alt rpm in relation to engine rpm.. smaller pulley on the alt, the faster it goes.. large pulley on the alt the slower it goes.

Thank you very much for all the helpful info. I have my 1-wire alternator hooked up and it seems to be charging fine. I was able to get a belt at a local mower shop. It is 1/2" x 40" but the taper is much different than automotive belts and it fits the pulleys much better.

All I need to do yet is rebuild the brakes and I think this baby will be ready to do some work. :)
