Folks,

I really need to build a run-in shed for my horses. I keep trying to design something myself and getting stuck.

Is there a decent source for easy to build plans for something like this? Preferrably free or almost free (the plans).

Thanks in advance,
David

Most State Agr. extension sites have shelter plans of some sort. University of KY. should have some decent plans. I'm sure Ohio State has some too, just have to do some searchng on thier sites, under the Equine section. I have gotten a lot of info from OSU's site. Anything from forage, to manure handling/storage, etc.

If it is a run in- it should be big enough so that 2 horses can crash through the door way at the same time, or small enough so they are not tempted to. I like 5' and 10 ft wide doors.
The height should be so they can go up on their back legs and not hit their head anywhere - I like 9' minimum. 7'-8' door ways is ok- 8 is better. The horse need enough room so that one horse can spin around without hitting the wall when the other horse decided to bite or kick. You need room so that you can escape to the side so that you don't get trampled (by even the nicest horse) when one is on the run from the other! Increase spaces and size as you increase the number of horses. For two horses, 575 sq feet works for me. -Not overly big. I have a 7X15 tack room along with a 14.5X 14.5 stall under the same roof. I have a second floor for 240 square bales & misc. The horses come and go as they want.

I have done my own sheds four or five times. No plans needed. I went and looked for way old posts, that I had on TBN here, pictures of progress on both an equipment shed and "horse" shed, I cannot find them.

So, what is your sticking point?

My sheds, were all pole type construction, basic squared, minimum cut 2X4 constructs with T-111 siding. The sheet size of the T-111 is 4X8 so everything was built to suit that. I started with sinking pressure treated posts, then framed them with pressure treated wood on the ground level, and simple 2X4's the rest of the way.

Here are two examples of the projects.

David, If I could do it, you should have no problem. It is just a math project, so you don't waste material. Notice the lack of workers in all the pictures? It was me, myself and I. :)

How big do you want itg to be?
What's the snow load in your area?
Do you want to be able to move from pasture to pasture?

Radly53,

I'm cosidering a max of 16' x 16'. I do not know what the snow load is here, but some winters we get nothing, and 3-4 years ago we got snowmageddon with 19" 24" and 22" of snow (it all melted inbetween snowstorms)

I do NOT intend to move this one. I am planning to put it inside a 40' x 40' holding area with 4 gates to control pasture access.

Thanks for the links.
David

Riptides,

VERY HELPFUL PIX!

I've been getting stuck on the following...

anchor/foundation - How deep, how many, and how long do those posts need to be?
roof - rafters or??? How many supports?
opening - How to span the opening and still hold up the roof? How big of a board, how big of an opening?
Walls - 24" studs or 16" studs? As I can see in your picture, NO STUDS! I like that idea!

I am also planning to set this right in the corner and use one side and the back in place of fencing (attach the fence directly to the shed in one corner).

I agree it is 100% a math problem, and I keep over engineering it...

I only have 2 horses now, I intend to have 4-5 max someday.

Thanks,
David

Excellent points TC!

DJ54,

I'm going to go looking for my local sites. Great advice.

Thanks.
