In Austin there are at least two metal recycling places... take in stuff by the pound and resell it by the pound, scrap much.
You never knnow what they will have that you can use... but at 15 cents a lb, if you can repurpose something to your needs, beats buying new. Maybe some place like that in your area... try yellow pages
I am in south central PA. I lucked out and found a scrap yard that also sells new stock. From talking to the guy who owns the place, he said they do a lot of business with small fab shops as well as technical schools. You could try calling the local tech school or high school shop and ask them where they get it.
My scrapyard stopped allowing metal sales back to the public.
The owner told me it was insurance rules, since they cannot gaurantee the quality or structure of scrapped steel. he told me the insurance company claims there have been succesful lawsuits due to steel that had been gotten from a scrapyard. They actually made good money from the re-sale of scrap steel, he acted like he was sorry he could no longer allow people to purchase it, it was pure profit for him.
