Hi all,

I am looking to purchase nearly 10k feet of 12.5 gauge, 4 point barbed wire. Both my in-laws and neighbor advised that I stay away from Red Brand. That's the only brand I can find locally. Does anyone have a preferred brand or site that I can try to look up?

Thanks!

I've used Red Brand and never had any complaints about it, same with Gaucho brand. Tractor Supply Company also carries OK Brand. On several farms I've worked on I just used what they had on hand often not bothering to look at the brand of it as they supplied the wire and posts and I just installed it. I prefer high tensile smooth wire myself and really don't like messing with barb wire but I would much rather mess with barbed wire vs woven wire.
OK Brand Premium 4 Point Barb Wire, 12-1/2 Gauge, 1,32? ft. at Tractor Supply Co.

Thanks Birdhunter.

The only store I have that has barbed wire is Tractor Supply. The link to the OK brand you provided is what I intended to buy, but they are out of stock at the regional or corporate level so I can't even back-order it for future delivery. That leaves the Red Brand. I'd generally assume we all have various experiences across products and likely none is a complete "stay away from brand xyz," but I was present when my neighbor's Red Brand wire snapped just tightening it far enough that it started coming off the ground. I just can't bring myself to trust it, I'd rather start off right.

I used Red Brand when I fenced my 80 acres - in 1982. The wire is still in great shape. No rusting and the 4-point barbs are still sharp as ever.

655 T-133 steel posts and six miles of Red Brand.

BTW- my original Red Brand is high tensile - 10 gauge.

The brand may be important but are you using low carbon barbed wire or high tensile barbed wire? That is really the difference.

Ask TSC if they can get high tensile wire like Stay-Tuff or another brand like Bekaert. I'm pretty sure they can.

Thanks! I'm no expert. I was looking at high tensile 12.5 gauge, but maybe with the high tensile I can go with a thinner gauge as it seems more available? It looks like I can get this shipped to my local store - Bekaert Cattleman Pro Barbed Wire 4 pt. 14 ga., 134936 at Tractor Supply Co.

Even though it's thinner High tensile doesn't bend easily like low carbon. You might want to check out some sleeve crimps and a crimper for splices. The Stay Tuff website has a good tutorial on working with high tensile wire.

The question no one has asked is what do you intend to fence in? If you're fencing in bucking bulls you need to have a steel pipe fence, if just putting up fence to put up fence then we've got other alternatives.

Great point! We are fencing in a few Angus steers.

I ordered the 14g 4pt high tensile from Tractor Supply as it was the only thing I could get without having to pay $300 in LTL shipping charges.
