I'm working on putting this back to normal and I'm not sure where the 2 little lines coming out the top of the reservoir go.
I've attached a pic.
It was like this when I got it.
The front line is just hanging under the tractor. There is a piece of fitting in it, and there is a fitting on the bottom of the pump with nothing attached so I'm guessing it goes there.
Does that sound right?

The bigger question is the rear hose. There is nothing really there. Just a really short piece of hose, and I don't see anywhere that looks like a hose should go from the tank to it.
I'm wondering if that's just a breather hose for the tank.
Is it just a breather, or does it need attached to something?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks :)
John

It might go to the brake valve use to keep it full of oil. Normally there is a line like that coming off of the main hydraulic case drain.

One small line attaches to fitting on hyd pump& other small line attaches to barb fitting on trans shifter cover.

Thanks for the info true temper and Tx Jim.
There's no fitting (or holes) on the shifter cover, I'll have to get a better look at the brakes.
But by what you're both saying it sounds like one puts oil in and the other is a return. So basically that tank should stay full? I don't think there was oil coming out of the fitting on the bottom of the pump but I would expect it to come from there. Maybe they plugged it. Unfortunately I cant do anything with it right now, I had to replace the coupler for the pump so I pulled it out and ordered one but it hasn't gotten here yet. As soon as I get that in I'll figure out where the oil going in is supposed to be coming from. The return line is easy enough. I can get it into the transmission somewhere.
Thanks :)

Sorry for posting incorrect info. Similar Ag tractors have a hole on shifter cover for a similar line to attach. My knowledge of JD industrial tractors is limited due to formally being employed 21 yrs by an agriculture only JD dealership.

It appears from viewing 301A parts schematics that those small lines attach to front hyd oil reservoir. https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/sidebyside/equipment/16919/referrer/navigation/pgId/1524470

Fitting on pump is to allow any hyd oil that might leak past frt pump shaft seal a route back to hyd oil reservoir(trans case)

This one has an oil cooler so the big return line runs into the bottom of the cooler, and then the hose from the top of the cooler runs into the top of the reservoir. and then the big return hose on the bottom of the tank runs to the pump.
The small hose from the pump up to the top is pretty simple to reattach. I wasn't sure of it's purpose but if it's just to catch leakage that makes sense.
Still not sure where the other little hose goes but the parts list says it's 23" so it can't be going far. I think once I get the coupler in I'll pull the air filter so I can see better in there. The hose has to go somewhere around the pump or one of the hoses near the pump being just 23" long.
This is a weird system. And I'm a little lost on jd. I usually stay with fords and fergusons. I've done a few IH. Mostly industrial. This is the first JD I've ever done. It's not really that different from the others but the few things that are different are very different. Whats confusing is the whole purpose in that tank and the lines. I've never seen one before. I'm not even real sure how the oil gets there as it's in the return side of the system. Fortunately the hydraulics all work so it does get there.
Thanks again:)

Yuou're welcome
Hyd system on a JD 301A is a closed center type. When a hyd function isn't being used front hyd pump continues to rotate but frt pump stops pumping oil. Front pump must be supplied oil because it incapable of sucking oil. Front reservoir is there so extra oil is available if trans pump can't offer adequate supply during high demands.
