While poking around in an old fallen down shop today we found what looks like either a starter or motor or generator. It has a cast housing that is rectangular instead of cylindrical with four brushes on one end and an angle cut square toothed gear (3" diameter) on the other. Measures about 8"x8"x 6" . No markings visible but it has two # 10 studs for electric connections. The two studs makes me think motor rather than generator.
In the same area was an old flathead four cylinder that had been used as a power plant to drive a flat belt, probably back in the forties but with the roof fallen in we couldn't get close enough to identify it either.
With the weight and output gear my first thought was starter motor, but I don't remember any square starters.....also no bendex visible...

Commutator?
You have got to post some pictures if you really want an accurate answer?

It has a normal segmented commutator like a starter motor, its the square configuration and the TWO studs for connections that throws me.
