What weight of oil are you guys using and what ambient temps are you operating at? I'm looking to change the hydraulic oil and was looking for suggestions. I'm running it for snow blowing so 10c to -25c what do you reccommend?

For the engine the nameplate states CD15W40 , any special additives that I need?

Hi,

These tractor are in 60's design, so they don't need sophisticated lubricant.
I buy these lubricant in 20L at Wall-Mart. For engine I use 15W40, 80W90 gear oil for transmission and differential lastly for hydraulic I use AW32.

I live in Sainte-Flavie Qc. This morning it is =18°c. The tractor is in my small garage, not heated. The tractor start well with a Kat circulator installed but at these temperature the fuel is like jelly, even with an additive and I have to heat the line from tank to the fuel pump with my heat gun until it stay running. I have to begin clearing the snow slowly to let the hydraulic pump to heat a bit and the oil pressure gage to back up from the upper red zone.

Jacques :)

I use 15W40 for the engine, 80w90 for transmission and AW32 hydraulic oil in the hydraulics. My tractor stays in an unheated shop (shop insulated) where inside temperature is usually 10C warmer than outside. I don't have any heat source for the engine yet, but it does start ok inside the shop when outside temps -20C or so. I usually let it warm up for several minutes while I work the hydraulics (FEL and TPH) until they move fairly smoothly and quickly.
The only other suggestion is perhaps, to use a 0W30 engine oil for the winter to aid starting oil pressure and lubrication. My tractor does fine with the 15W40 oil as far as I can tell.
Around here (Prince George BC) temps can go down to -35C in winter and often do.

I use "Power Service Artic Formula" in my diesel fuel - even though the fuel is supposed to artic diesel for our winter. Does seem to make a difference and I haven't been getting a problems with gelling.

Same here, 15W40 Rotella T for the engine. Basic 80W90 in the gear boxes and differentials and AW-32 hydraulic fluid.

I thought the hydraulic fluid was also the same fluid as the rear differential?

No, there is a big difference between the oils. You might be getting UTF (universal tractor fluid) mixed up with hydraulic oil. Best to stick with AW32 for the hydraulics and 80W90 gear oil for the gear boxes and differentials.

No I meant doesn't the hydraulic oil not also lubricate the rear differential in the foton 254 or are the compartments separate?

Exact same here, don't have a fuel problem tho. Running slow for 5-10 minutes and I'm good to go.....Mike
