Looking to buy a truck, I'm thinking 3/4 ton or 1 ton.

Truck needs to be dependable, easy to work on and maintain (by myself) and cheap to work on.

Basically a good old farm truck, I need it to haul 7500-10k safely.

I had my eye on a 92 4x4 flatbed F250 with 7.3 IDI with 118k miles

My current truck is a 81 F150 with 4.9 strait 6 with 128k miles, it's been a super dependable truck, starts right up and most I pulled was 5200lbs on the bumper a few times hauling round bales on a tandem 18ft 10k trailer which it handled like a champ accelerating lol i wasn't stopping in a hurry. I don't plan to go more with it but my tractor and trailer combo is around 7900lbs plus gear and attachments.

I also will like to note I own an 85 F350 4x4 dully dump truck which I have been going back and forth about setting up to pull with, it's got a 460 v8 and is manual but the cab has been changed to a 93 XLT and the previous owner didn't hook the emergency break up, half the lights don't work and gas tank leaks. Also no hitch.

I bought it as a project/ to make money on and so far got it running good, new calipers, shoes and rubber break lines on the front and will be tackling a rear steel break line leak and gas tank next (when the weather breaks). It has unknown miles prob close to 275-300k (which is a concern) and was used to push snow so it's had a hard life (another big concern for safely pulling). I was gonna haul gravel for my driveway with it and send it down the road being I don't need a dump truck often. I have part concrete drive and wanted to use a 1 ton so I wouldn't bust up my driveway or I would have a big truck haul gravel for me, instead of a bunch of small trips.

I also thought about upgrading my 81 F150 with a class 4 (7500lb) or 5 (10k) hitch, break controller and trailer hook ups since currently it has non of that, no trailer light hook ups at all, but I can do all that for less than $300 but at the end of the day I can't haul my tractor, I can haul more on the trailer though being it had breaks on both axles, the 4.9 had no probs pulling 5200lbs, stopping was the main concern. My next concern will be burning up the automatic tranny in the truck.

Note: pulling on mainly flat ground 1-50 miles one way mostly.

So if you guys or gals have a old truck you beat up everyday and it keeps asking for more, let me know. I'm trying to expand my cattle endeavor and am quickly out growing my current equipment.

Luckily I bought as big of a tractor I did, trucks are much cheaper to upgrade lol.

And doesn't have to be Ford, I have just owned a lot of them and had good luck with them. When a good deal comes along, usually it's a Ford for me anyway lol

If it were me I me I would get a 05 or later F350 with the V10. Good power and none of the diesel issues.

How many cattle do you have to move?

I sold a 14K rated gooseneck to someone with a naturally asperated 7.3. The trailer weighed about 4500 pounds and the buyer at first was a bit put off on how hard it pulled with that non turbo 7.3.

While there are plenty of dually's around, I see more and more cattle haulers stepping up to small IH's, Ford F-650/750's, etc. Older models can be had for much less than late model dually's and while mileage can be an issue, the lack of or reduced monthly payments add up too. One of the issues going this route is a typical open rear, ie; getting stuck on spit.

I had 2 steers and a bull calf in 2016, my first steer goes to butcher the 27th of this month, if I find ground to rent I want to go up to 5-10 this year depending on what I can afford, it's just to make extra money. And I enjoy it.

I still have a full time job that has been financing everything lol.

If I find 50+ acres to rent who knows in 2-5 years I might be up to 40 or 50 head.

It will be some time before I can buy ground, maybe after the tractor and a few other things are paid off. I'm 26 so I have a little bit of time to figure everything out.

That's a pic I took a few weeks ago when I got another calf. So I just have 4 right now, 3 of which will be heading down the road before too long

I'm with you on this, I have had four diesel F -350's and they aren't cheap to maintain, the old 7.3 was a good old truck for sure but they are getting old, F-350 all the way towing what your towing.. The only issue I know of with the V-10 was a spark plug issue and manifold bolts would snap off but if those issues are addressed, they are powerful and reliable.. Nothing wrong with a Chevy 6.0 either..

I have also thought about getting a F350 or 3500, I also haul water with my truck year round and I hear diesels don't like to start, run for 10-15 mins and shut down too often

The Chevy 6.0 gasser has been proven to be a good powerplant... couple 200-300k mile trucks at work, but you end up with front suspension parts wearing out.

Personally I'm a fan of '99-newer ford powerstroke trucks. My single wheel F250 has hauled my 20' deckover (over)loaded to about 24k lbs combind gross. Crazy as it sounds, I'd rather tow with the F250 (manual trans) than the dually (Auto trans). If you choose to go the Ford superduty route, and want to avoid diesel, the v10 offers simular power/torque in the same chassis. The superduty trucks are tough, comfortable, and readily avaliable for reasonable money. Buy one from down south with little to no rust. My buddy bought an extended cab long bed F250 4x4 7.3 diesel for $2600 from Georgia.

I custom haul cattle/horses (part time) from pasture to pasture or to the sale barn with a old beater '98 chevy 3500 DRW crew cab 4x4 454 4.10 gears long bed and 6-8 mpg. The 454 has been "worked" into a strong gazz guzzler tow motor (375hp/500-520 torque). You need a 4x4 for this type of work.

Most road trips I use my '03 2500 quad cab Dodge/Cummins NV5600 3.73 gear 2wd pulling the same 16k triaxle GN stock trailer when making road trips (all paved) out to around 300-350 miles at 12-13 mpg. This truck has just over 300k miles with little maintenance and gets more road use than the DRW.

Both trucks pull several other GN and bumper pull trailers. I even have a GN bed plate in my wifes '16 chevy crew cab 4x4 so she can pony my empty trailers when needed.

No more than your doing a gas engine will work fine.

I'm surprised nobody had mentioned duramax lol my buddy has a 2500HD with a 6.6 turbo duramax that hauled my tractor home and I like that truck a lot, but there a bit out of my price range right now.
