I'd like to buy this old Snap On toolbox and am wondering what you guys think would be a good deal?

It's about 20 years old in good condition. The owner is the original owner and was the head mechanic at a chevy dealership. Not sure of whats inside it yet though, but I'll find out next month. For now, any ideas on what the box alone is worth?

The main body is 28" deep, 53" wide and 38" tall not including the side cabinets.
The top section is 36" wide and 23" tall and roughly 22" deep or so.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would recommend you look at the prices for new cabinets of equal value and features to get a rough idea of what they cost today. Then deduct for age and wear steeply. I have over twenty rollaways but none of them are as good as the ones you posted.

Really suspect the seller want to sell as a package with the tools, and the cabinet cost may be a minor issue.

If you have a Harbor Freight store near you look at their tool boxes, the quality is surprisingly excellent. If not, tale a took online, this way you know what price you can buy a nice roller tool chest for.

My gut feeling is that the seller will want more for the box than the tools, but I've been wrong too many times to put much value in that prediction. Even though the toolbox is old, I'd bet he'll want over $4k for it probably somewhere in the range of $10k if it's loaded. It all depends on how much he needs to sell and how strong the market is right now. I'd say it's a buyer's market, so your offer should be significantly less than he wants. . . maybe half.

Alot depends on market, some places you could get that box super cheap.. other places not so much.

If it was me, with the extra side cabs id say $5-750 would be a really good price. Anything up to $1000 would be acceptable.

Do a search using searchtempest.com to see what others are asking for something similar. You can search the whole of Craigslist.

With Snap-On rollcabs like this one I would pay no more than $750 since it's so old. Assessing value on an entire tool set is tricky.. The best way to assess the value is to inventory the box and look up the part numbers online. Then look each tool or set and see what like sets are going for used online. Since you would be buying the entire set, I would factor in about a 30% discount off the prices you see online.

If this guy was a professional mechanic and the box is full to the brim with tools, I would assume his number is easily going to be $15,000.00

Tools are very expensive and hold their value pretty well.

If his number is way too high for you, perhaps he could sell you just the tools you need and the box and sell the rest separately.

Alright so it seems like 500-750 would be a fair deal for the box. I really don't know what is in it yet but I'm assuming there are quite a lot of tools in there. I may just try and buy the box by itself because i really can't afford what i'm sure it's all worth. Then again, i don't know if he'll sell the box alone, I wouldn't, only because then where the heck would you put all the tools! It may not work out but we'll see.

For conversation but I gave over $12,000 just for my box from Snap-On 10 years ago no tools and its worth no where near that now. Just saying he knows he is going to get a hosing at resale sad as that sounds its the way it is.

I had that same top box and sold it to a friend for $500 and he got a deal the side boxes are 100-200 the roll cab is probably a grand just guessing so if you can buy just the boxes for $7-800 that would be probably decent deal.

And remember if its got Snap-On tools they are warranted for life so anything and everything can be made new. If you know a Snap-On man the tools are worth more now that when he bought them simply because retail has gone up.

+1 on Car-Doc's post. Snap-on is lifetime warranty on tools.

Typically, you can still get that cabinet new in different colors for around 10 grand from Snap-on just the roller cab, not the top or side boxes.
