Well, The house is finished and the winter is fast drawing to an end. I figure it will soon be the tiem to plant grass.

So, What type of grass would you all recamend for horse pature in north Florida (i.e. Just north of Gainesville) and when and how should I plant it. The soil here is dead in the middle Ph wise and is very sandy. I plan to rent a disc to take care of the weeds and then buy a seed spreader to do the planting.

what else do Ineed to know?

Seeing that you live just south of me, I would say in a few weeks and not too many of them, our trees are just starting to bud around Orange Park, Fl.

Hey Jim,
Glad to hear another local on here. I am in Keystone. What kind of grass do you have?

I have no idea but I'm sure I have some of what you have. If my yard is almost green, I'm happy. It's a mixture of weeds and other junk, nothing special.
just north of Middleburg on RT 21

I would plant some Tift 9 or Pensacola bahia for your pasture, I have a mixture around my house. I have planted Argentine bahia around the house and tift 9 for my horse pastures. I spoke with my seed supplier the other day and told me that for the money Pensacola is your best bet for pasture. Try this company Hancock Seed!, Bahia Grass Seed Information and Wholesale Pricing

You guys are certainly way ahead of us here in Southern California, I feel like our winter is just getting started and don't see any buds on any trees around here for a few months... well maybe March.

You guys make me sick! Talking of planting grass and buds opening up. Were in the dead of winter yet. Supposed to drop 30 degree's tonight. A wind chill tomorrow close to ZERO. Wake me up about the middle of April!

I'm no expert in grass, so consider that in my opinion.

However, since you have warm weather so much of the year AND IF you do not want to mow the grass at least weekly; you might consider Buffalo Grass. I have some on a hillside part of my lawn and it grows very nicely.

The better part is that it rarely gets above 3". When I mowed last fall, the rest of the grass grew back quickly but the Buffalo grass stayed short, but still thick.

In summation: Buffalo grass seems to do well in heat and takes less mowing.

Tscott, I know excatly the kind of soil you have. I'm just down the road from you in Melrose. I tried to redo my yard in this past spring with bermuda and now I have nothing but weeds and sand, mostly because of the lack of rain this past year. Going to give it another shot here soon. Good luck with your project and keep us posted.
