Can someone here give me some suggestions for teh type of fence that I should get to go around a pond.

I hae a pond and there are some neighboring houses nearby and I would like to put a fence around the pond for piece of mind.

I would like to have about a 6-7ft tall fence maybe topped with bobwire. Most of the field fence that I have seen is not this tall so I am not sure what type of fence I should use. Also, it seems that someone could climb field fence fairly easily if they wanted to. Is there some other type of fence other than chain link that I could use?

I really like the fence that they put beside the interstate but I am not sure what kind of fence that is or where you could even buy it.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Chain link would be the best with 2 barbs at the top leaning outward. About anything else is going to be climbable. However, A few strands of high tensile wire with a electric Fence charger would work and be the least expensive. Ken Sweet

So it sounds like you are concerned with people trespassing onto your property and enjoying your pond without permission. Not sure if you live there and could see the fence. I would not want to put up something that took away your enjoyment of the place. I would think some field fencing and then topped by several strands of barb wire should do the trick. Don't think you really need to go as high as 7 ft, more like 5-6 ft should keep them out. Often they will cut the wire if they want to get in bad enough so the height is maybe not as important.

What I am really worried about is making the pond secure so no children could get to it. There are several houses very near the pond and I want to make sure no children can get to the pond.

Buy more insurance too.

Your intentions are good, however, if a kid wants in, he will figure a way. I know I would when I was a kid. I would make sure you are "posted" around your property line and at the pond and buy good liability insurance. Ken Sweet

Thanks guys. Can someone tell me what putting up "posted-no trespassing" signs does for me? Does it lessen my liability? I there a rule about how for apart they need to be etc?

Thanks.

I believe the distance apart may vary? I post mine on the line where I can always see 1 sign from the other. A pond is considered a "Attractive Nuisance" here and extra, more specific signs about "No swimming allowed" or something to that effect would show in a court case that you were making the public aware of the possible danger. This should limit your liability exposure. Ken Sweet

I'd think that you should GOOGLE "attractive nuisance pool" and include the name of your state. This should lead you to legal info addressing your problem. Trespass info for your state can be found the same way.

Am not a lawyer, but suspect that your liability will be greatly lessened if you take reasonable and prudent measures to protect your property from trespassing and kids. Likely, this involves putting a no trespass sign every 1000 feet, putting up a fence around your entire place, putting up a fence around the pond (an electric or difficult to climb fence) is about all you can do. If you can demonstrate a reasonable effort to discourage/prevent people from getting to your property, that is all you can do.... a determined **** sapiens will find a way in if they wish to do so.

This may be a stupid question but here it goes anyway. The fence I can understand but then barbed wire on top, isn't that kind of like 2 wrongs to make a right? You're trying to stop kids from getting hurt by hurting them. I know in parts of NY if you use barbed wire you better have some sort of live stock other wise the lawyers will be banging down the door. Just a thought but I'd ask your insurance, codes enforcer, and town board what they would reccomend.
