Hi guys.

I have a 99 ford F250 Super Duty (gas) pickup.

I also have a JD5410 tractor wither loader, loaded rear tires, plus several attachments. (bush hog, hyydraulic chipper, post driver, rototiller etc)

My question is, what kind/size trailer would I need to load the 5410 with loader and 1-2 other attachments on...and would my truck be able to safely pull it? If not, what size truck would be required?

Thanks all in advance!

Your tractor's dry weight is 5300 lbs., that's just the tractor. Add at least 1000 lbs. for the loader, loaded rear tires are likely 750-800 lbs. for each, so you're up to 7800 lbs. or better. Figure 2000 lbs. for a decent trailer, you're nearing on 10,000. Your 250 is not nearly enough truck. It may pull it, but stopping it is another story. Just my opinion.

You need a bigger truck or a diesel F-250 and a trailer with electric brakes on all axles. The problem is your V8 gas engine. A diesel truck can tow twice as much as the gasser. I have a 2006 F-350 4x4 Single Rear Wheel and tow 16,000# trailer 7,000 miles a year with no problems. The trailer is triple axle and has brakes on all three axles.

A F-250 4x4 gasser in my book has a tow rating of 8,600# and the F-250 4x4 diesel has a tow rating of 15,700#. Nearly twice as much. The engine makes a big difference.

I thought a 250 SD had a tow rating of about 12k or 14K for a goose neck? 8500 has to be a bumper pull spec --- right? If so, you are fine. You will be best off with a GN trailer in the 12k to 14k range. I'd buy a 22' 14,000 pound trailer with a load capacity of 10,000#.

A f-250 SD 4x4 has a bumper pull rating of 8,600# and a 5 wheel rating of 9,400# according to my 2006 book. The same truck with a Powerstroke has ratings of 12,500# on the bumper and 15,400# in the bed. Bid difference in the engine.

Look at your "door sticker" for axle and GVWR. Also look at your tire rating.

A good gooseneck rated for 5 tons will be closer to ~4000 lbs empty. So it will max out your truck. For legal and liability issues you may need a bigger truck. But with a gooseneck you could pull it locally occasionally just fine with some common sense. Personally over about 6000 lbs (cargo and trailer) I would not want to tow with a tag along trailer. Maybe with sway control and weight distribution but thats a pain. Gooseneck holds the weight so much better.

I've pulled my small farm tractor with my 3/4 ton truck and weighed it at the truck stop. I think my tractor weighs comparable to yours (if above post is correct).

Superior brand 20ft flat 5 ft dovetail (2) 7000 lbs axles gooseneck trailer My weight came out to be

Steer axle was 3800 lbs
Drive axle was 4380 lbs
Trailer axle was 7680 lbs
Gross 15,860 lbs.

Empty my truck weights ~ 6440 lbs
3720 frt
2720 rear

I tow my L48 on a 24' gn with my f350 6.0 with forks and a snow plow + bucket. My truck also has the 1000# heavier springs f/r

It tows just fine plenty of brakes and no smoke from them either. Trailer does have dual 7000# axles and brakes.

L48 is 7760 w/fel and bh. Also tires are loaded. I think my cab weighs about 400#

Your 250 will pull it with a 5th wheel trailer. I would not attempt to pull that type load with a bumper pull. You could also upgrade to a 350 or similar sized truck which would have no problem. I can tell you from experience, my 2002 f250 had all it could handle in my 4520 JD with loaded tires and a 4/1 bucket. I estimated my tractor to weigh about 6700# and my trailer weighed 3450, for a total of 10,150#, which I pulled with a 20 foot bumper pull. The truck pulled it great. The engine had no trouble getting the load to unsafe speeds. The problem was the load waffled at speed almost no matter how the tractor was positioned on the trailer, which was a good quality trailer. I actually traded for a smaller model tractor to avoid the anxiety associated with long distance hauling of this machine. It makes me wonder how Toyota and others rate their trucks to pull 10,000 plus pounds. My dad has a 7700# "HD 150" and his truck crumpled under the weight of my tractor and trailer. My truck could not have handled a much heavier load safety-wise, unless I went 5th wheel. I would say if you like your truck and want to tow heavy, go 5th wheel with a heavy duty trailer; if you wish to upgrade a dually 350 would be a better choice. Those extra rear wheels offer more stability when towing.

Wow, that is pretty wimpy for a 250SD! It's about the same as my old 2000 Chevy 1500.

Of course, there's spec's and then there's spec's...

It really depends on weather or not you have the v-8 gasser or V-10 or 6.0l diesel.

It is the same for the Chevy and dodge as well.

A friend of mine wanted to hire me to use my tractor but did not want to pay for my truck as well so we used his Chevy HD2500 v8 gasser (big engine). My rig just about killed that truck. we went 40 miles and used 3/4 tank of gas (about 2.5 MPG). stopping was no fun.
