My apologies in advance if my lack of search expertise did not find an answer.

I want to get a roller for my yard. I need to smooth out several spots...moles, heaving, etc.

Is there an advantage to 60" over 48"? Or vice versa? Ability to pull the weight is not an issue. Maneuverability is not an issue.

Thanks for insight.

All things being equal, the one that puts the most weight down per square inch will be the one that does the better job. That's just my opinion, and is worth exactly what you paid for. Mark

The advantage a 60" roller would have crossing over a mound is that most of the weight would bear on the raised mound.

I have a small roller 36"x18" water filled roller that works okay for newly prepared lawn areas. This roller has about 130 lbs./ft of width. I like this for small jobs where I need to work on customer lawns as I can empty it and it weighs about 30 lbs without water. Easy to handle and work with and low cost single drum tow type.

For the tougher jobs I have a much heavier roller with over 400lbs./ft of width and about 2600 lbs. overall. Much better for packing down rocks and high spots. I use this for grading jobs where good compaction is needed. Easy to maneuver in tight turns with segmented rollers and quick hitch. Makes for quick changes between my land plane and roller without leaving the seat.

I built my house on a lot that was Florida jungle when purchased.

After eight years, the lawn has low spots where buried woody material decayed.

I roll the lawn with my 60"/700 pound ETA Cultpacker which reduces the protrusions, but experience has shown I need to fill subsided areas with compost to get the turf flat, then roll for evenness.

My soil is instant draining sandy-loam.

Would something like this be a alternative to maybe roll and kill moles at the same time? Ken Sweet

You can buy poly rollers at Tractor Supply Company (TSC) cheap.

You have to empty water before a hard freeze or they split. I have used the lightly built poly roller in photo for eight years in Florida.

However, if used on rough/bumpy ground something may give early. I only use my poly roller on turf.

For heavier duty applications consider a Cultipacker, especially if rolling in seed is part of the task.

Cultipackers are relatively easy to come by relative to heavy-duty, Three Point Hitch mounted steel rollers.

Ken Sweet has REALLY HEAVY, towed Cultipackers for sale most of the time.

MORE WEIGHT PER FOOT = MORE FLATTENING.
