My snowblower has a manual lever to adjust the up and down of the chute. I want to install a small hydraulic cylinder. I would need about a 6"-8" stroke but what size bore should I use? If you have any links, i.e. ebay, to specific cylinders that would do the job it would be appreciated.

Also I have a foton 254 with a multivalve with 4 connection ports at the back of the tractor. I already use one for the side to side movement of the chute. I am going to use the other 2 connectors for the up and down function. When I build the hoses for this cylinder what type of connector do I need to connect to my hydraulic connectors on my tractor?

Things to remember about hydraulic cylinders. The smaller the bore for a given flow rate of the pump, the faster the cylinder will cycle. Also the smaller the bore, the less force it will exert for a given pressure relief valve setting. Conversely the larger the bore, the slower the cylinder will cycle for a given flow rate, and it will exert more force than a smaller bore for a given pressure relief valve setting.

In you application, you need next to nothing in the way of force, and you probably don't need a whole lot of speed either. Make sure the stroke will bottom out before it tears your chute up. You may need a needle valve flow restrictor to slow down the movement.

Yes I plan on fabricating my chute linkage so that the cylinder bottoms out without tearing up my linkage. Thanks for reiterating that important point. I am assuming since I will be bottoming out before the linkage that the amount of force is kinda irrelevant. I am trying to size the bore so that I get the speed of travel around where I need it. I'm trying to get away from using a needle valve because I don't want the system pressure to spike every time I adjust the chute. The multivalve has a common relief valve for both outlets.

I bought my cyl. at Princess auto. Smallest one they sell.

Thanks for replying with pictures. :) That is exactly the setup that want.
From the pics it seems you have the the 1" bore x 4" stroke here or the 1-1/2" bore and 4" stroke like in this link. Can you confirm which you have?

How fast does yours move in operation?

You should also ask his flow rate and compare that to your tractors pump flow rate.

The first link to the 1 x 4 is correct. I have it hooked up with 1/4" hoses to help slow it. I think the pump is 8.5 GPM.

If you just yank the rear remote lever it moves quite fast, but if you feather it a bit it works fine.

I also have hydraulic rotation but that uses a motor so it is a little slower.

Thanks Cleat and k0ua I think I have what I need

As said, smallest cylinder available (of right stroke) and you can simply insert a 'flow restrictor' in the circuit.
You can also make a restrictor (using an appropriate to the hose and fittings) male/female fitting and welding shut the passage and then drilling a much smaller passageway.
But at that restrictors are available in the $5,00 range or so.
More than once I have made some however as it was more convenient than going to a shop and finding 'no stock' on hand.
