I have a John Deere 47 Backhoe with a 9" bucket. This bucket is too small for any serious digging. It doesn't hold enough to move much dirt.

Removing a tree

I have 2 questions.

1. I would like to get a larger bucket. What is a good bucket size for general purpose backhoe work that will work with the 47 backhoe?

2. How and where can I find a bucket to purchase?

Thanks,
Obed

I have read that some of the John Deere 47 Backhoe's were OEM manufactured by Ameriquip. The Ameriquip 7600 Backhoe has the same specs as the the John Deere 47 Backhoe. The links to the specs for each are listed here:

47 Backhoe
Ameriquip 7600

It appears that the 47 Backhoe and the Ameriquip 7600 are the same piece of equipment.

I've seen buckets listed on occasion on eBay. I'd also visit with your dealer and see if he knows of or has a bucket layin' in the back lot. It's surprising - the odds and ends that a dealership will accumulate over time.

I had an 18" bucket on my JD 8A hoe (a little bigger than the 47) and it was a great all-purpose bucket. It would dig a trench that you could walk in without having to skid sideways and it was a demon on stumps, too.

I'd think that if you could come across a 16"-18" bucket, it would serve your purposes for most things.

Although, that 9" would be a good tool for stumps and digging in rocky ground, especially.

Best of luck.

I'm with AK...... i've got a 16 and feel its a good all around size. But keep the nine around for trenches, stumps, etc.

Measure the pin size, the spread between the ears and the center of the pins and go hunting. I did just that and bought a heavy duty 18" bucket for my JD 7 on e-bay. The seller was listing it as a Kubota bucket but the dimensions fit the JD 7. I bought it and it fit perfect. I still do not know who made nor do I care. As far as an all purpose bucket, I find that most of my digging is with a 12" bucket. The 18" was bought for a special project and has sat since it has been completed.

I have a 10'' bucket on the BX 23
Actually it measures 11 inches.
Planed to later get a 12'' and a 16''.
The 10'' works so well I never ran into anything that I could use a 12 or 16 on.

For my 3320-447 combination I have 9" and 12" buckets. I use the 9" for utility trenches and the 12" for general digging projects. I have very hard clay soil with rocks and lots of tree roots, so with a larger bucket my land would just think I was giving it a friendly pat.

Whitey,
That's good to know. I'll measure my bucket and see what I can find.

Has anybody actually used a bucket that was so big that it wouldn't bite into the dirt you were trying to dig?

I've got a 12" on mine and sometimes wish for a bigger one when I get into mud/clay/sand. Other times when I'm into rock and roots I wish for a 9"...
Mainly I wish for an easier way to replace the teeth when I pop one off in the rocky stuff. At least they are reasonable in price, not like most other OEM items....(I try to keep a coupla spares)
