i have 6 acres that are all sand and 1 acre that is wooded. i need to do a lot of leveling with some brush removal. i don't know what will be best: box blade, rake, or just a back blade.

Morning jason.
How about rake w/drop down grader blade maybe w/boots on the end of the rake...kinda like two in one deal, also for use in years to come.

I would use a landscape rake (york).

Sand like a sand box sand? Any vegetable matter? Maybe a few pics would help.

I agree. I'm picturing something like a barren desert or the beach.

Have you ever heard of a Harleyrake? With only six acres of sand you could probably rent a skidsteer model and get it all done in a weekend.

Out of neccessity because of the sand here in the Mojave desert, I devised what I call a sand float for my drag box. It is quite effective in keeping the drage box from sinking in the sand and with the T&T you can feather the dirt how ever thick you want it..:D As you can see with the pictures it hold right up on the unit for storage along with the brush rake. The rake is wonderful in removing the creosote brush around here. The rake also goes on the front of the drag box if your neck gets tired and you don't mind running over the brush before you pull it out.

My super sand finish implement is my modified carry-all. I can post pictures of that if you want.

Well it looks like I forgot to resize the sand float pics so will do that and get them posted.

Here is the sand float pics. Could have made some gauge wheels but this is what I had and it has more surface area.

I like the box blade idea, you can then add the sand float if you wish. I borrowed a box blade last year and was impressed with what you could with one.

For my sandy soil, I use a disc harrow, then drag a chain harrow to smooth it. I run it one direction then run perpendicular followed by chaining. On the last pass I pull the disc harrow and connect my chain harrow to the disc, this way I am doing two things in one pass. It really puts a load on the tractor, but it is fun watching the disc harrow bust and turn the soil while the chain is smoothing everything out.

I like the idea of the boxblade too. It seems to me that you can tilt it backwards so the rear blade smooths (does not dig or cut) and then run the scarifiers (rippers) down to act like a brush rake. The scarifiers will yank any brush out and lightly till the sand, and then the rear blade will smooth it out. Small stuff will not be picked up, of course and you need a landscape rake for that.

mfrost,
I like the idea of your sand float on the box blade. It acts exactly like gage wheels without the wheels. I would think you can get a really good smooth finish with that. Good idea.
