What # oil

Posts that I have read,states that I should use Rotella 15 w 40 oil in my 1610D tractor.In the Manual for my tractor on Page 20 item #2,the chart does not even mention 15w40 oil.
What should I go by.According to the Chart,I should be using
SAE 20 wt

hi there,
per recommendations of other tbn members, I'm using rotella 15w-40 for this winter. it meets specs for diesel engines and is lite enough for winter usage. i have a chart for a ym180d (but i own a 1601d) and the oil specs aren't specific enough for me to find what i need. so, i've gone with the 15w40 hth, -arthr

... i thought i should add: i ran my tractor today for about 2hrs at about 2000RPM clearing thick snow. This is the first two hours under the new oil and it didn't solifiy (ie. turn jet black). Also, it did seem to allow the engine an easier spin at trying to start up under 30F weather. So, i'd recommend going with the 15w-40 for colder weather......

Back when these tractors were mfg. (early 1980's), 15w-40 oil was rare. Also the API service codes have been updated since then. Rotella 15w-40 or equiv. is the standard for most diesel engines today.

I run only rotella. I use rotella 15w40 in winter but i switch to rotella 30w in late spring. I think the 30 wt is probally only needed when it is very hot outside. Some might use 40w (if they can find it) in very hot weather? I think most run the 15w40 in winter. U could run 20w in moderately cold weather. In very very cold weather you could run a 5w30 if you could find a good diesel grade......If you warm your engine a little before starting the 15w40 will work in very cold weather just fine......
