I have a fifty year old Ford 800 series tractor that I have had for 35 years. It is about time to buy something new. I want to know what tractor in todays market will do the same work. I use it for dragging fallen trees, grading my driveway with a box blade, brush hogging, etc. This tractor has a four cylinder gasoline engine. The original book shows it to have 48 horse power but I don't know how they were rated back then. It sure doesn't seem to have all that much power to me. A full box blade of dirt will pretty much bring it to a stop. Any ideas on what a comparable tractor would be today?

John Deere made one that was comparable a few years ago that I believe was a model 5103. They were a good, sturdy, reasonably priced, 2wd, tractor that would be a nice, drop in replacement for the 800 series Ford, plus they give you power steering. Your uses dont sound like they would require 4wd. I think the 5103 has been replaced, and I am not sure if you can get 2wd in the replacement model, so you might be best looking for a lightly used 5103. Lots of folks who bought them discovered that they really needed 4wd for loader use, etc, so it shouldnt be too hard to locate one. If you do think you will be wanting a loader, then you will definitely want to get a 4wd. That will also let you drop your hp and tractor weight about 25% and get many of the same jobs done.

I have a Ford 861 Powermaster. I wanted a FEL and really needed a 4x4 unit so I bought a 284 Jinma with R1's. Its a 3 cylinder diesel, 31 HP on the pto per a dyno, and about the same weight as my 861. With wheel weights, front weights, and the FEL it tips the scales at 5,200# I am amazed at what it will do compared to the 861. With its torque of a diesel, rear diff lock, and 4 wheel drive it will flat outwork the 861. The only thing the 861 is better at is turning a bush hog and other high horse power implements. Simply put I now use the 861 about 3 hours a year and the Jinma 125 hours per year.

What I am saying here is if you just want the pto power of the 861 look at that spec on any new tractor and compare. If you are dragging trees, pulling stumps, pulling a plow, ect any newer 30ish HP diesel tractor will do more work than the 45ish HP the 800 series made if sitting on ag tires and properly ballasted. Just a word of caution. Many of the new tractors will be very light weight for the HP they produce so do your homework. I like the secure feeling of a heavy tractor and feel you can get a lot more done with one that has some weight.

fulks, you are speaking my language.

I am a fan of the no-frills, basic, geared tractor myself so here are a few that kind of fit in your wheelhouse:

Farm tractors for Ag Farmers, Hobby Farmers - Sub Compact, Compact & Full Size 2WD & 4WD Utility Tractors

MF 2600 Series

John Deere Ag - New Equipment Features for 5045D Utility Tractor (45 hp)

Montana Tractors also market their C-Series as a basic tractor (the same thing as a Long 800 series from the late 80s/early 90s) although some are offered only with 4wd.

If not new, the recently defunct Farmtrac line from the former Long Agri were building essentially Ford tractor designs from the 1980s up until this year. Montana is taking over some of the support for them.......other things you could get from a New Holland dealer.

My 2008 Mahindra 5525 has a 4 cyl diesel (54 hp engine, 44 hp pto), weighs 5370 lb (without loaded tires or other weights). The 3pt hitch can lift 3525 lb. It has a partial constant mesh tranny (8F/2R).

The 5525 is a simple, heavy tractor, a throwback to the 1960s like your Ford 800. It traces it's lineage to the IH B414 (Mahindra had a license then with IH to produce B414s in India).

Forgot about the NH TT-A............good call.

I've been saying and still do that if I were to replace the little 8n with a brand new one it will be a Mahindra 3325/3525 that does it.

Looking at some of the slightly older, used Mahindra models is not a bad idear either.....1997 MAHINDRA 475 40 HP to 99 HP For Sale At TractorHouse.com

I just replaced my Ford Jubilee with a Massey Ferguson 1540 with FEL. Boy, no comparison, should have done that long ago. I had the Ford for 30 years also. Its been good tome, but that FEL and the added power is sure sweet.
I had some plowing to do this fall, and it just ate it up. I was looking at tractors for awhile and never thought I would pay that much for a tractor, but we came across a 3 year old MF that only had 100 hours and the price was right, so its ours now. And it even has parking brakes that work...yipee

Your machine must be wore slap out.

I have a well worn 850 I move round hay bales with on the front end loader. Only problem I've ever had with power was getting it all to the ground... IE.. getting her ballasted enough to not spin. Engines good, clutch is good. tires are good, tires are loaded and I have a rear weight... the ground -ALWAYS- looses when it comes to traction.. Never have ever come close to stalling her.

If you were compairing to a well manitained 800 series.. you'd be hard pressed to find a new machine that will last as long and o the same work without shelling out probably 12+K$
