I was looking a a Scag Tiger cub for sale The guy says it's 4 years old. It has a 26Hp B&S 3600 hours. He wants around $3500 for it.
Does this seem like a lot of hours for 4 years?

That's a lot of hours no matter how old it is. More importantly, it's a LOT of dollars for those hours. I would not necessarily be afraid of a well-kept TC with those hours, but I'd whack the price about in half. Used zeroturns are a dime a dozen around here, and some guys are quite willing to sell at (almost) any price.

Too many hours and too much money. Check Craig's list regularly and you can find low hour comparable ZTRs for the same kind of money. That particular unit should sell in the area of $1500 or so. Unless major PM has been done on it, you could be looking at significant dollars. The engine is close to its service life if not past it, but I would also think about the hydros, pumps, blade mandrels, belts, hoses, control linkages, numerous bearings/ bushings and other wear items. Been there. You could easily spend $2-3,000 worst case. Machines like this I view as having salvage value and if I discover otherwise then I figure that I came out good. Remember to be patient when shopping for used mowers. Bad deals are easier to get into than out of.:)

I took a closer look today and there is a decimal point.
The correct hours are 396.1

My 2004 Scag 61" Turf Tiger, for an example, has 390 hours after six years of fairly regular use. 100 hours a year isn't much for these mowers, most of them are built for 10 hours a day all summer commercial landscape maintenance use. I expect this mower to easily outlast me, which is why I sprung for an $8000 mower instead of one of the cheaper consumer versions. I'm still glad I did. Scag and Ferris both make fine HD mowers.

Horse of a different color. Still may be a little high, don't know what it sold for new, but I would guess in the 6k area. It's your call, price is within reason.

I've seen that mower new for $6500-7000. 400 hours isn't much. Not real crazy about the Briggs engine. If it had the Kawasaki I'd say it's a great deal. I Still think it's a good deal.

I'll second that on the engines. I've been really happy with the 27hp Kawasaki liquid cooled V-twin on my Turf Tiger. 400 hours and it's yet to burn it's first drop of oil, and has never given me a minute's trouble.
