Hello gentlemen,

I have a Massey 231S that has developed a leak and I wanted to see what you guys think.

It is coming from the oval shaped plate that is held on by 2 nuts just above and towards the rear of the left step plate and forward of the PTO lever. The nuts are in a vertical orientation, I checked them both and they are tight. The fluid is definitely coming from there. It didn't leak much, maybe a softball size spot on the concrete floor but this tractor has always been dry as a bone.

What is this plate and aside from just a bad seal would there be any other reason for it to leak from there?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Here's a couple of pics of the leak. Since Friday night it has seeped a little more but not enough to drip any more onto the floor. The leak is coming from the small oval plate held on by the two nuts just above the left step plate.

Here's one from the bottom.

My thinking is that this is an access port for some sort of adjustment, but I couldn't find anything searching here or in the owner's manual. I don't have a service manual yet but I figure it is probably in there.

What do you guys think? Is this something to be concerned about? I'm hoping it is just a matter of draining the fluid and replacing the seal or gasket around that plate. I checked and both nuts are plenty tight.

Thanks,

G'day i think what you have there is a mounting lug for the hyd pump should be one on the other side of trans in the same spot if so then drain the back end and undo the two bolts and pull out, clean up,some new sealant and bolt back in, top up the oil and good to go:thumbsup:

banjodunn and FWJ,

Thanks a lot for the replies. I'll get that taken care of pretty quick, I hate leaks. Glad this is something minor, I feel better just knowing what it is.

Thanks again for the help, hope y'all have a good week.

Pls take some pics of the removal, new sealant, and replace. I'm curious what is behind the plate.

Will hope it works well for you.

We like pics. :)

Will do.

What would y'all use for a sealant? I was thinking some Permatex liqiid gasket type stuff...I don't know exactly what it's called but i figured that would prob be best.

Also, will a 5 gal bucket be enough to catch the fluid in the rear half? Manual says it holds just over 9 gals total, but i don't know how the fluid drains between the 2 plugs.

Thanks, I'll keep y'all posted.

G'day i think i would have something a bit bigger than 5 gallons not 100% sure that might be enough to lower the oil under the plate height, as for the sealant i would use a good quality automotive grade silicone, permatex or loctite are some that i would use over here but idon't know what ou have available to you over there.
