Tractor
2002 JD 990
I am looking to buy a Tractor , the local farm has a JD 5300 , that looks like it will do all and more of what I will be doing . I have taken a hard look at the 4700 's , and was waiting to see if the new , 4710's would be a better choice . I have not been able to find out any real useful info on the 5300, to scale it to the newer models can any one help me please .
Thank You

I think the 5300 is now called a 5320. When I bought my 5410 the 5000 series was 5210, 5310, 5410 and 5510. A year later the line was upgrade to 5220, 5320, 5420 and 5520 (and a few other models introduced i.e. 5205).

What kind of work are you planning on doing? There is a big difference is size/weight/power between the 5000 series and the 4000 series. I probably could have gotten by with a 4000 series, but ended up with a 5410, which I am happy with, but certainly to big a machine for regular mowing tasks...

Edit: to clarify, I could *probably* have gotten by with a smaller tractor, *but* I have never regretted the buying the larger 5410. I don't always need all that power, but I am very glad I have it when I need it. It is too big for finish mowing, but I already have a 27HP yanmar for that.

The new 5205 is a close "clone" of the 5300, about 1 1/4 PTO hp less and I like the gearbox better.

What price is on the 5300 and is it MWFD?

If you find a 5400... now that's nice...{60 PTO hp, Turbo}...

Gotta agree with ejb... I have a 5520, which is about the same as his 5410, but with an added turbocharger bringing the HP up a little bit. Often, I think that for about the same money, I could have gotten by with a 4600 or so, and probably gotten a backhoe as well. Not that I don't love my tractor, but I often think that I could have gotten by with something a little smaller.

Well some day I will have run of a small 20 acrea farm , the work I am having done now is by a 5300 owned by a real farm operation. I have one chance at doing this , that is to get my first tractor , and would like to get it right .....
