I recently had a pond built, and all the soil was placed around the pond, in gentle mounds. The topsoil is pretty thin. It is very compact in some spots, and kind of loose and "cloddy" in other spots. I would like to get some grass growing on it this spring, but I'm wondering what would be best to prepare the ground. A landscape rake looks like it would rough up the compacted areas pretty nicely, but it doesn't look like it would bust up clods too well. Maybe a small harrow? My contractor suggested dragging a treated 6x6 or an old bedspring. I tried the 6x6, with only marginal success. This is probably a one time shot, so not to interested in spending a lot of money. Maybe i could find a used harrow, unless you guys have a better idea..thanks so much for all the input.
