1972 Ford 2000
Hey guys, I recently "inherited" this tractor from my grandfather. It had sat for years without use, and I've got it running well after replacement of the fuel lines, new diesel(learned how to bleed the fuel lines during this process), patched the front flat tire, and cleaned the air filter. I need this tractor to cut 70 acres of pasture. The PTO arms lift without any weight, and will lift me, but when i put the bush hog on it, it will lift it only about 6 inches off the ground.

I looked in the Back axle to see if there was fluid in it, and there was minimal amounts, that i had to look hard to even see at the bottom.:ashamed: Would this have an effect on the lift arms not being able to lift the bush hog? Also, even though this might not affect the lift, but what fluid should go in there? what weight? thank you

Here is some data for your tractor.

http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/005/1/5/5150-ford-2000.htmlto max up,

Hydraulics:
Type: open center
Capacity: 6.3 gal [23.8 L]
Pressure: 2500 psi [172.4 bar]
Valves: 2
Pump flow: 4.0 gpm [15.1 lpm]
Steering flow: 4.25 gpm [16.1 lpm]
Steering press.: 700 psi [48.3 bar]

After you have raised the 3pt,*does the relief valve start screeching or making a hyd sound?

You might check the fluid level.

Get yourself a hyd gage and check pump pressure, and relief valve setting. .

Ford 2000-3000-4000-5000 Tractors Operators Manual | eBay

Buy this operator's manual, or one like it (not my auction). Get all your questions answered. Don't worry about a gauge until you learn how to check and fill the fluids.

Transmission, rear axle, and power steering take a universal tractor hydraulic fluid meeting New Holland's MC134D specification. Engine takes 15W-40 or 10W-30 Diesel rated engine oil.
Hydraulic (rear axle) fill is under the rear of the seat to the right of the draft control spring. Level plug is a 1/4" pipe plug just to the rear and above the RH running board. Fill until the oil runs out when the level plug is removed.

wouldnt a shop manual answer more questions mechanically though?

If you don't know how to check the oil, an owner's manual will tell you where and how to do so. If you want to check the hydraulic pressure, a repair manual will tell you to be certain the oil level is correct before proceding to other diagnostic steps. There is basic information that the operator's manual has that a repair manual won't contain. If you want to learn how to provide basic maintenence for your tractor, an operator's manual is a far better choice than a service manual. Walk before you run.

Both manuals would be good to have.

You might be able to find them on a CD or DVD.
