Tractor
JD 5400
Am not locked into JD loader but would preferred. Hydraulics are at rear if tractor. What would be needed for full operation, should attempt to install myself?

520 fits 2wheel drive.541 fits mfd.the mounting brackets are different between 3 and 4 cycl motors.loaders are easy to bolt on then plug them into the back.

Cowski pretty well nailed it, but there isn't much to the plumbing behind the tractor. These are the two best pictures I have of my 5410's plumbing from the rear. Pretty much just lays on the axel and is suspended on the way through. Very simple nothing 'extra' that you need. Pretty straight forward installation.

I have attached the URLs for the 520/540 loader and the 521/541 loader you may find helpful. While I have not seen to may used 540 loaders out there. Some of the ones out there are missing the parking stands and often the clamp that is under the tractor between the rear tire and step. You can check JDparts for availability.

If you get a used one, you might want to consider figuring out how to drain the fluid that is in the loader and put in new.

You might also look at machinefinder, tractorhouse and fastline to see what people have put on.

I have a 5400 2 wheel drive with 3 cylinder, do I understand that only 520 is fitted for this tractor? Does any of the newer units fit? For a used units do you have any recommendations or sources for of good units? Thanks for the pictures!

Per the Operator's Manual the 522 and 542 loader will fit the 5400.

A loader designed for a 4 wheel drive will work on a 2 wheel drive. They have more clearance for the larger front tires used on 4 wheel drives. If you look at the boom arms they do not slope down as much on the loaders designed for 4 wheel drive.

I think the only difference between 520 and 521, 540 and 541 is they moved the torque tube to make the headlights more usable. Seems on the 520 and 540 you raised the loader to normal travel height and the torque tube blocked the headlights. My 640 loader has the torque tube in the way of the headlights when raised, JD really moved it down on the replacement 673 loader.

553 should also work. JD likes to make there newer loaders backward compatible to service older tractors. They want to be able to sell you a NEW loader. Al they have to do usually is design a set of mounts.

553 loader will work on a 5400 tractor in 2wd or 4wd. The downside of looking for a used 520, etc is to make sure they have the proper mounts with it as well. Mounts purchased individually for the now discountinued loaders like the 520, etc can be as much as $1,200 each side. Were also different for cab and open station units as well so purchase used carefully if you can find one to make sure you dont have to buy the mounts seperate.
