I am looking at buying another portable welder to speed up the building of my fence and some other projects. I was looking at buying a new bobcat but came across this.

What do you think this is worth?

14 ft. tandem axle trailer with steel floor, bottle racks (bottles not included), hose racks, cable racks, tool box, 25' of twin hose with quick connect convections, Victor Journamen torch, and regulators. Lincoln "Ranger 250" welder with 940 hours and 50 feet of lead. Trailer has new tires and has been in a barn its entire life as has the welder.

$2800.00.. Good Welder, Great Torch. The trailer is nice but unusual as a welder rig because of it's size.. Kind of over kill being a tandem but all in all...I would go 28-3 on it.
I have a similar set up and would have to have that for it.

Good luck..

Thanks for the reply. That is along the lines of what I was thinking. The guy is asking $4500 which I thought was way high but all welders seem to be high here. I was looking at a 2005 model bobcat 225 they wanted $2500 for. I can get a new one with 3 yr warranty for $3027. I always try to buy most things lightly used and get good deals but it is looking like new is the way to go.

The best way is to look at the parts then look at the whole.

The trailer is worth a 1000.00.
The ranger 250 is a chopper based unit, which gives excellent arc performance. Having welded with both myself, the DC only ranger wins hands down. Generating power is good. You can get them for about 2500.00-2800 used in good condition. IF its a GXT, it may be worth less, it is not a chopper. To get a chopper unit, now you have to go to the 305. These units have dig control, and similar arcs to the old SA series. GXT is a good unit, but not as good as the chopper. IMHO
The victor torch should be worth about 125.00 or so.
3500.00-3800.00 if purchased separately.

But together you may see a little discount....say 3400.00

Their are many people around where I live have this type welding trailer configuration. Its good for hauling steel with you.

4500.00 is too high.

Give him an offer of 3250 and see what he says. Come up to the 3400.00 mark. But don't go over 3500.00

Bdog, I fully agree with both Yomax and Mark. I had it figured in my head the same way they did. Sounds like you already had an idea that the guy is too high. Also, I agree with you when you say that sometimes the used market just tells you to buy new even if you have to put out the money for the leads. Doesn't hurt to make the offer and see how motivated he is. Let us know how it goes.

WOW Mark, I' am impressed! I see you're not just a salesman.
I have a buddy who has a 305G, I think the chopper on his machine is a little bit better than the dig on my Dynasty 300. And yes his machine runs every bit as good as any of my SA-200s, plus he has CV!

As a proud owner of a very special 1958 SA 200, and a Ranger 8, it is hard for one to admit there is anything as good as those old Shield Arcs.

My SA 200 is a long hood, but it was still being built with short hood features. Its not a red face, but still a black face. However, by some well known authorities, It should have been classified as a red face. I have been working on restoring it. But progress is slow. I need to convert both the idler and mag.

Here's an old video of it I posted on line...running right after I got it.

You must have what I call a transition year. I just seen a 1972 with a R-57 idler, but with an octagon barrel. I guess you could call yours a Red Headed Step Child:laughing:! Doesn't really matter it's still 100% copper.

Here's a few of mine.

Those are nice. Did you do the restoration yourself?

I am still trying to find someone that can make a new hood at a reasonable price. I have had a couple of "well respected" companies that do manufacture hoods and the like for other products try, but they cannot copy the radius. Mine was bondoed and rusted through with somekind of metal patches under the paint when I went to strip it down, and rust was breaking out all around the edges. Then I guess I need the side panels

Yes I did all the work myself.

You're looking at about $300.00 for that hood from Stumpf's or Bill's. If you can live with it not being 100% perfect go with the shorter hood, (will not come down to the bottom of the faceplate) for $127.00. These hoods drop shipped right from Lincoln, and are a perfect fit.
Or you can call Jeff or Robert at Progreesive Metalshaping in Okc, 405-619-9988 they made the hood and doors for the shorthood on the right.
