I was just told at my local dump they don't take hydraulic fluid, but maybe the dump in a nearby city does. I checked out the website of the dump in the nearby city and they have a looong list of hazardous materials you can drop off there -- hydraulic fluid isn't on the list. Maybe they take it, I'll call to find out, but I was wondering what other people do with their's. I'm in S. NH.

Thanks

I wonder why they won't take it? Do they have a specific day for hazardous waste? Our transfer station takes all my waste oils, including hydraulic oil.

My township has a recycling drum outside their maintenance building. I'd just mix it in with my waste oil-change oil and drop it off there.
If I were you I'd ask around at your local gas stations or go to the township/town maintenance center and ask there.

A automotive service station should take it. My neighbor owns a bridgestone store and he'll take it and put it in the used motor oil tank. I would thing it would not adversely affect the quality of the oil sent back for recycling.

That's what I was thinking too. My dump takes engine oil, but 2 people who work there said no to hydraulic oil. It's pretty similar, no? PITA.

I'm in Milford. Our dump has great hours ('til 8:00 pm today), but they only take engine oil. They've got some real PITA's working there, too. No way would one of them tell me it was OK to put hydraulic in with the motor oil. They referred me to the Nashua tranfer station. They take hazardous waste once a month. PITA. Nashua's web site says specifically that they do not take motor oil, so I'm worried they don't take hydraulic either.

Two truths:
(1) They're fundamentally both refined petroleum products.
(2) The tank happily accepts whatever you can manage to dump into it, it doesn't care.
Mix it in with your other used motor oil, and learn not to ask any questions of dump personnel that you won't like the answer to. ;)
(Before anybody wigs out, no I'm not advocating dumping ANYTHING into the tank)
I saw the bar & chain oil idea in another thread, and that's what I'm going to be doing with my next batch.

So, I should lie?!?! I should just tell them it's motor oil!! Sounds good to me. Only problem is that I poured it back into the hydraulic fluid containter it came from and I'm a really bad liar to begin with. I'll buy a container at HD and just drop it off no questions asked. That is, unless someone else tells me why this would be a bad thing to do.

I seriously doubt the people at the dump know what hydraulic fluid is. They just know it isn't motor oil, therefore, they can't take it.

Regarding the chainsaw idea. The 3 gallons of hydraulic fluid I've got would last me a lifetime.

I would be suprised if a town accepted oil from a non-resident of that town.
The place you purchased the new oil from may take the old. Wouldn't hurt to ask. For some reason, I think they may be required to take the old oil, could be wrong though. I'm in Dunbarton, the people at our transfer station are great.

The place in Nashua they referred me to is some kind of regional waste center serving about a dozen towns. Not just the Nashua dump as I implied earlier.

I'll call Chappell and see if they'll take it, they're only 5 minutes away. They must go through quite a bit.

Your lucky to have good folks at your dump. There was an old lady who I think had Parkinsons working at my dump forever who would literally yell at every person she came in contact with. There is another guy who was yelling at all of us one evening at 7:30 for coming so close to closing time (8:00).

I assumed that you had direct access to the dump tank without having to be patted down :) At least that's how it is here... I have yet to encounter an employee at the tanks. If you mix it with some used motor oil, then you're not lying about what you're dumping (you're just not disclosing the whole truth). Sure looks enough like used motor oil that nobody should challenge you.

Our local TSC store takes all tractor fluids for recycling.

Oreilly auto parts here in alabama will accept used oil, as long as there is no antifreeze or gasoline mixed in with it. they have a dump tank and I think they will accept 10 gal at a time max.

Well, I just got off the phone with someone from my local "regional household hazardous waste collection center" and they told me they will take the hydraulic fluid, but I should tell my local dump it's similar to motor oil and they should take it there too. As I stated earlier, the problem I have is that most of the employees at my local dump are pr***.

Any of the auto parts stores that accept used motor oil have a list on the wall. Both that I use have oil/fluid are ok, no solvents...All petroleum-based, whether oil, tranny fluid, power-steer fluid or hydraulic. some of them do have limits like 5gals. per day, but I have gone twice in a day, nobody noticed

Shoot, times are a changin'. No one has posted the old "use it to start burn piles" standby yet... :p

Mix a bit of used motor oil with it (I'd guess that you change your motor oil at the same time you do your hydro), call it "used oil", and you're set. No lying involved.

Was that "PRiceless"? "PRinces" ?

I have used non-synthetic mixed 3:1 with diesel as fuel. If it comes out looking good, the drain pan is clean and I use a filter funnel to put it into a 5 gal fuel can. Has worked well.
