The bottom of the housing of the right front axle of my 4wd DK45 rusted through and sprung a leak. What do I do? Put more money into this rust bucket or dry it out and try JB weld? I'm not even sure I can dry it out well enough for the epoxy to stick. 20170329_151108.jpg

I'm not familiar with your equipment. But instead of JBWeld you may want to consider a product called Marine Tex. Amazing stuff. You can clean and fill in or use it with Fiberglas. I've made a few repairs with it over the years.

Go to Marinetex.com. Then click on products then on Marine Tex. Read about it. You may find it at a boat supply house. Any way good luck on your repair.

Is the hole in the casting, or a lighter metal plate retained with a snap ring? IIRC a lot of these are machined straight through with a "cap" to close the bottom. In other words, it might only be a $5 part.

I hope you are right RustyIron. I'll look into that ASAP.
Thank you.

Good point, a quick google search found this thread, I didn't get to read it but maybe it'll help the OP:

Look down to post #5, there is a parts diagram for a CK25, which contains this diagram. Look specifically at part #4, Plug.

Thank you. I've also found the diagram for the DK45 in the service manual. The manual simply say "Remove the plug". So my guess is that there is such a plug but how to remove it is up to the mechanics I guess.

I went ahead and order a plug and a clip according to a part diagram I found. Hopefully it's going to be just remove the clip and replace the plug kind of deal.

It may just be press for and also held in with a circlip. If so, tapping it on one side should swim it around, or punch a hole and grab with large pliers.

I'm with Rusty. It's a cap held in with a snap ring.

How to remove it? Snap ring pliers then a flat screwdriver to pry out the plug. Tap in the new plug then reinstall the snap ring. It would take less time to repair it than to load it on the trailer to take to the dealer.

Nearest dealer is two trailer hour one way so I will definitely do it myself.

I got the snap ring and the cap out. I found pretty good size chunks of metal at the bottom of the cap. I'm pretty sure they are from the gears so my guess is that the gears are compromised.

I'm at a point on my schedule where I simply can't start this repair. Can I button it up, fill it with good oil and run the tractor on 2WD mode temporarily until I have time to get all the parts & gears and fix it? My current assumption is that I will have to replace all the gears in the bevel casing on that side so could it get any worse running that way?
