What digital camera do you have/want?

I am shooting very little film these days and getting more interested in digital cameras especially since lately, the quality is very good, the prices are better and the competition is fierce. What kind of digital canera do you have or wishes do you have for a digital camera? I have a 2 year old that I would like to sart going to digital on. I have fooled with many point and shoots like the Sony 707 and Nikon 950. Biggest drawback is s h u t t e r l a g. By the time I take the picture, he's either gone or found a new face. I've been to some great sites and am aware of the many offerings out there. Curious about the folks here. Rat...

I use a Sony Mavica FD91. I like it because it uses the square plastic 1.44 MB diskettes. Another good feature is that I can make a spare disk from the pictures that I had just taken and give it to someone while I do with the camera. It is a great camera and has "steady control" that steadies the camera even if your hands are shaking. Built in flash and zoom. It was expensive when new, about $1000, but you can find them on e Bay for about $200 - $300 now. I know that there are cameras out there that will take larger MB pictures, but for what I use it for, this has the best of all the features that I could want..... ease of operation.... flash........ and a recording media that I can carry lots of in my pocket and is cheap and readily available....

I've had a series of digicams and my current one is a 5.2mp Minolta D7. I picked it for its resolution, it's a DSLR, and has the best lense in the non-removable lense digicams. The newer D7Hi is black (cool) and has refined the firmware for faster auto focus and minimal shutter lag. I use mine in manual mode mostly (like my old 35mm SLR's) and have never noticed any shuter lag.

Price range is in the $900 range.

Junkman, that is what it's all about! I used one of those types although I don't think there was any ability to stabilize the image with the one I used. Sony FD 91

Hi Mike, is Chugiak on the Kenai penninsula? I have a bunch of Minolta 35mm stuff. I have seen some 8X10's out of the higher Mpixel cameras like yours and have found very little difference between it and the 35mm transparencies I have taken.

P.S. have been up to Alaska 3 times since 1978. Last was a trip out of Dillingham flew up north in a twin radial engine (the name of the plane escapes me now) with overhead controls that could carry about 8. Landed on a lake and floated down a river out to the Bering Sea. Alaska begs to have a great camera. Minoltas image 7

Are you sure? On my camera, you press the button down halfway to focus -- then hold it there, and press it down when you want to take the picture. Instant.

If you are trying press the button down in one shot, then yes, you will find lag in the time it is trying to focus.

Another way to stop the lag is to set it on manual focus, but I find it much harder to focus manually with my digital camera than my SLR.

There are many digital cameras that offer the ability to capture several pictures, e.g. 15, in memory, with no shutter lag.

I have an Olympus C-2100UZ. While it's only a 2.1 Meg camera it has a 10x optical zoom with Image stabilization. I also have a 2x tele-converter for this camera, that lets me get real close! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I also have a Minolta Dimage Xt 'shirt pocket' camera. It's a 3.2 meg camera with a 3x optical zoom.

I have an Olympus C-3030 digital camera. Pretty good camera, but like most cameras of its kind, it has that really annoying "shutter delay" that makes most picture taking almost impossible except for thihgs that aren't moving....its pretty bad, and kids and animals don't lend themselves to well to "still" photography.

Now, the camera I would *like* to have....the Nikon D1-H...WOW...its a professional digital camera (my brother has one he is a reporter), and has the look and feel of a regular 35MM SLR; interchangle lenses, seperate flash etc...the beaty of this beast is can you take super high resolution digital pictures, with NO delay...it is truly an amazing camera, and I look forward to the day when these "high-end" features trickle down to the consumer version.

When he got his (work paid for it), it was somewhere north of $5000...I believe the prices have come down to the $3500 range, but still pretty pricey. Worth it if you are a pro, but hard to justify otherwise..

Good question David. Heres where I have experienced the lag. When taking a picture of a kid jumping in the pool and waving to you, your lucky to get the splash when the intent was to capture the kid waving. I don't know if it is soley focusing slowing it down or the exposure calculations as well.
