Since there have been numerous discussions around various oils, I am just curious what the various tractor makes currently state in the "owners manual" for diesel oil ratings? Particulary, later models since 2001 as the newer oil classificatons have come out.... Do they state CI-4, CH or still just CF. Also, any particular test specifications such as Cummins, JD, Perkins etc... Other than weight of oil, do they give you very much guidance..? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The manual for my CK20 says to use CC or CD, or higher. Those designations have been obsolete for decades but the "or higher" means that CH or CI should be fine since they are much higher. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

2005 Perkins (MF 491) owners manual states CI-4 in weights of 5-30( 10-30,15-40 etc) thru HD30 depending upon expected temps.

This is from my Mahindra 3325 (Engine Model MDI - 1895 E) owners manual:

( Following oils of SAE grade 15W40 are recommended for temperature range of -15c to 50c. ( 05f to 122f )

1. Citgo - Citgard 500 15W50
2. Exxon - XD3 Extra 15W40
3. Chevron - Delo 400 15W40
4. Mobil - Delvac 1300 15W40
5. Shell - Rotella T 15W40
6. Texaco - Ursa Super Plus 15W40

Other oils can be used if they meet minimum requirements of:

* API service classification CF4 + Mb228.1
* CCMC D-4 / G-4 / PD-2
* MIL - L - 2104E
Multi-Viscosity Diesel Engine oils are preferred.)

A temperature chart includes suitable oil viscosity range for temperatures ranging from -40c (-40f) to 50c (122f)... Oil viscosity range from SAE 0W30 to SAE 40.

( *Factory filled oil is 15W40 and may change in future.)

They printed brand name oils in the manual?? That is strange.

Looks like class 3 oils with "older" API certs and the anti rust spec. I know some on the list are low in ZDDP and TBN.

Hey Mike,

This is one of the many things I like about my 3325... all lubricants (as well as anti-freeze) list examples of brands, and let the owner know that the "specification" is what is important, not the brand.

Read through the owners manual a couple times... didn't find any "house brand" recommendations. My Mahindra 3325 operator's manual implies that changing the oil & filter is more important than the "brand" used. (instead of implying the warranty somehow hinges on the use of a specific Mahindra "badged" product.)

Thanks Phil...

This is one of the reasons I asked the question.... you will see a reply I put in the Mahindra section on use of Mobil 1 - 10W30... Those automotive gasoline oils do not necessarily meet all the specifications required by the tractor manufacturers or engine manufacturers... may or may not, so it is always good to check. We have alot of advice going out to use synthetics, and that is fine, but it should be the proper type of oil that meets the specifications for the tractor.

You may not necessarily find all the right oil at the automotive parts place or Walmart or whatever. I will say though that you can generally find Rotella or Mobil Delvac at most of those spots...

It is odd that the specify certain brands, but many other brands meet those same specifications....

I presume when the temperature range is below -5F then you can go to a 10W30 or 5W30 or 5W40 as long as the requirements are met....right? Or does it not specify that?
