C7F2861C-42DE-4BA9-8459-26333CE26566.pngGuys,

I am looking at purchasing this disc from a man close to me and he has obviously done quite a bit of work to it. He replaced all nuts and bolts and put 11 new 20 disc on and 8 all new sealed bearings. He told me he believes the disc is an older Massey Ferguson disc but has not found a plate to confirm this. He said when he purchased it, it was faded white and red which was mainly Massey and International but International does not run the same type of bearings this one does therefore he believes it to be a Massey Ferguson disc. It is obviously very clean so what is a fair market value? It is 6 foot 10 inched how it is in the picture but can be widened at the back to 8 foot. He called it a broke back disc which I have never seen before and if you look at pictures you will see what is means. You can adjust with the top link on the disc itself for leveling he claims. Any help with Brand/Model and price is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Chase

Implement in the picture is 6 foot 10 inches wide but can be widened at the back to 8 foot.

When either front or rear disc gang is set at its widest, the pans will be straight. Set straight, pans will roll over the ground rather than penetrate.

When either front or rear disc gang is set at its narrowest, the pans will be at an aggressive angle and the disc will penetrate, if the tractor can pull it. Bed behind the DH will be rough.

What diameter are the pans/discs? This will allow us to estimate the weight pretty accurately. Also, are the pans spaced 7" or 9" apart?

How wide are your tractor's rear tires, outside-to-outside?

I have a similar size and construction disk but not the same brand. I paid $1000.00 new. Mine weighs about 560 lbs. I live in central Alabama with red sandy clay soil. My disk needs about 200 lbs additional weight to penetrate first pass. My tractor is 45 hp, pulls and and lifts the disk without hesitation. Your JD is more powerful and has better lift capacity.

This may help.. J Bar double section harrows

The disk you are considering does not use full square tube for the frame as evidenced by your photo. It is likely the holes through which the gangs are located will eventually "pound out" a bit leaving the gangs sloppy when working. You may wish to consider added strengthening in that area.

Base your offer accordingly.

Guys thanks for the quick replies. Jeff I believe my tractor is really close to 72” outside of rear tires. The disc size is 20” and I believe they are 7” apart. It appears to be a heavy duty disc just never seen a make or model built like that. So neither of you have ever seen an older disc built like this either? I do like the fact that it hasadjustablr gangs with the cranks rather than pine has sometimes they are difficult and finicky. I believe this disc will weigh close to 900 based on what I have been told.

Not sure of the brand, but I would be a player if the price is right. That looks like a nice disk that should last you a very long time.

My tractor is 72” outside of rear tires.

As the working width of the front/cutting gangs is 82", it is the right width to cover your tires.

The disc size is 20” and I believe they are 7” apart. I believe this disc will weigh close to 900 based on what I have been told.

Some opine that discs with 18" pans are effective. I my opinion it takes a disc with 20" pans to penetrate in one or two passes over the field.
Discs with pans spaced 9" penetrate better than discs with pans spaced 7", because 9" spacing has less float.
Discs with pans spaced 7" leave a smoother bed behind the implement.

This disc could weigh 900 pounds, but probably weighs 700 (+/-) pounds.

I like that disc has crank-adjustable gangs rather than pins as sometimes pins are difficult.

Leinbach used to sell discs with crank adjustable gang angles. Everytfhingattachments.com adopted Leinbach's disc design and sells crank-adjustable discs today. I like to adjust my Disc Harrow fairly frequently, so easy adjustment is important to me as well.

I would lube the threads with dry, wax-based lube which will not accumulate dust. I would be careful to remove rust which accumulates on the threads before it builds up. It the threads get rusty or the all-thread bent, it will be difficult to adjust.

It appears to be a heavy duty disc just never seen a make or model built like that. So neither of you have ever seen an older disc built like this either?

I would term a disc with 20" pans and rectangular frame, rather than square frame, medium duty.
No, I have not.

The disk you are considering does not use full square tube for the frame as evidenced by your photo. It is likely the side frame holes through which the white gang bars pass will eventually "pound out" a bit leaving the gangs sloppy when working. You may wish to consider added strengthening in that area.

Make your offer accordingly.

I would not offer over $500 for this disc, given its light construction and uncertainty. I would not buy unless this disc were mounted on a tractor and I could witness all pans turning smoothly and crank-adjustment fully functional while implement in the air.

I am sure this disc did not have its origin at Massey-Ferguson.
