OK, I am a newbie with all this stuff. I own a Ford 861 Power master. (801 series) and also a Lenar 274-1. I would like to purchase a small 3 point backhoe for doing some small projects on my property. I am trying to figure out what would work for me and what I will need to purchase. I have looked at the LW-6 on eBay from one vendor in the $2700 range and it says that it includes a PTO pump and reservoir and everything needed. I have spoken to the dealer on the phone and before I had the money to purchase he sold out of them. He said it would work great with either of my tractors, but better on the Lenar because it has a front loader.

Anyhow, now in looking for another unit, I come across another unit on eBay that is more money that claims to also be a LW-6. But it says it runs off the tractors hydraulics. Well my concern is I don稚 think either tractors has the hydraulics needed to run the backhoe. This new auctions says if you don稚 have hydraulics on the tractor that you need to purchase a pump from a tractor supply store.

So my questions are:
1. If I was to buy a unit like this, what all will I need to purchase on top of the unit and how much work will it be.
2. Would the ford make a decent tractor for a backhoe like this, or would the Lenar be better?
3. What kind of costs would I be looking at to adapt a tractor to work with this hoe.

Also I have found a CGI backhoe for sale in my area with similar specs that is about 12 years old. Says it is made in the USA. Owner says it is in great condition. It is the same price as the base prices of the new backhoes I have looked at on ebay. It is tough to choose between an older used US made backhoe and a new China made backhoe for the same money. I don稚 expect to use this very much. Just for a septic system and some water lines and maybe a small stump (4-6? here and there.

Thanks for any advice.

I pick out; "a small 3 point backhoe for doing some small projects on my property".
and
"I don't think either tractors has the hydraulics needed to run the backhoe"

Well, you may be surprised at how little flow most small back hoes need for small projects.
As a sweeping generalization; if there is enough flow (& pressure, mustn't forget THAT) to run a loader then there is enough flow and pressure to run a hoe.
A lot of the hoe work in "small projects" doesn't require a lot of speed, it often requires fine control and sometimes high flow rate is a curse.
I rarely run my tractor above about 1400 RPM for hoe work, I need force but I don't need speed for actual digging.
I often idle it right down and even then need a light hand on the levers (1/2 open).
Swinging the boom around to dump gets uncomfortable if done too quickly.

I am trying to imagine a project that would require running my hoe "flat out", i.e. where I would be speed limited....
Maybe cutting into a steep sand bank, or rough digging a BIG pit ?
Not small projects and for big projects I guess the 80/20 rule applies.
Get what will cover 80%, rent or hire out for the 20%.

So, I would go off the tractor hydraulics, last time I looked PTO pumps were several hundred dollars - probably not worth it.

Two things. 1] If the Lenar has a FEL it probably has adequate hydraulics for a BH. You could check flow and pressure capability in the specs. If ok then the issue would be putting in a set of remotes to tap the BH into the system when you need it. This could be good for you since remotes are very handy for all hyd accessories.
2] If inadequate hyd, finding a BH with pump and tank included would of course save you time and the detail work you will need to invest to get a well unitized system. If your knowledge and skill and fabrication level is high this may be trivial. :confused3:
