I was wishing that someone would make a propane or butane heat gun, with a fan powered by a tool battery, or even maybe better, alkaline batteries.

I have Ridged tools and found that they do make exactly that. But details and availabilty are sketchy. Plus I want the bare tool.

Milwalkee also makes a heat gun, and I would like that even better, except I don't have their line of tools.

I generally only use a heat gun for heat shrink tubing, occassionaly.

Any other alternatives out there?

VERY interesting. Question is, is there a battery and blower? I cringe when I see someone do heatshrink with a lighter as do I when I do it with a torch.

I just use my little propane torch, the one with the disposable 1 qt. bottle.

M18™ Compact Heat Gun (Tool Only)
This is excellent for heat shrink. Eats a battery fast. I use it for automotive heat shrink, when an extension cord is a pain. Agree on propane torch to hard to control heat. Can melt wire and if not careful..... won't use propane type torch for heat shrink.

The M18 would be perfect except I don't have that tool line. For shrink it would be perfect. Run out of juice, just grab another battery.

Have watched pro's covering pub bar tables with heat shrink and they use a torch with a very wide flame that did not look that intense, worked well and the finish was good.
I have used steam for covering splices on ropes with heatshrink, not so good for electrics I would think.
