Well tiles for old dug well

Hey guys,

I found an old dug well that I would like to rehabilitate instead of fill-in. It is currently unlined and about 25' deep in clay. After reading about typical well-building procedures, I think that I am most comfortable with dropping well tiles in the hole to line it first, then undercutting the newly-formed lining. I am trying to figure out the cost-effectiveness of this approach, though. I'm hoping that you guys might know the price of those precast 4' diameter well tiles.

I would suggest monitoring the air quality if you go down in there and it sounds like a lot of work pulling those buckets to the surface.
What about jetting it down and bailing it out the muck?

I would suggest contacting a precast concrete supplier in your area....where ever that it.

Also, as the previous poster mentione, monitor the air quality. Decomposing organic matter at the bottom of wells like that can eliminate the oxygen supply.

Just as a point of reference, I purchased a well tile 36" outer diameter and 42" tall from a local pre-formed concrete seller and it was $185 with no cover.

Thanks, guys. I used to have a job working in enclosed spaces, so I would definitely watch ventilation, etc. That is some scary stuff.

But $185 for every 42" of depth! Whoa! I think I need to start considering other options.

I had good luck sinking well tiles by stacking them as you mentioned, then I jetted under them with a pressure washer & pumped out the mud. I was in gravel and eventually the sides started holding up the tiles but in clay you should be able to get quite deep. Miked74T
