I have to say, getting the bladder out of the tank is the worst part. It took longer to remove the bladder (it being all slimmy from the water/rust). than to install the new one. Oh by the way the replacement bladder was 107 delivered and to replace the tank was 320 for parts. (Craftsman 85 gallon tank.) I had to slit the bladder into several sections to remove it from the tank but it will come out-eventually /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. To put the new one in it required rolling the blader like a cigar and slipping it in. I am just happy to have it done so I can wash this muck off my arms. Just thought I would throw this out there.

Replacement of the tank was my fist choice too /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif But for 200 bucks difference I needed to do it. My location may have a lot to do with it. I was paying twice the money people in Az where for feeder troughs. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Its that dang San Diego sun tax again 2.25 gal yesterday for gas Red Disel 2.08 gal.

Thats intersting! I didnt know the bladder could be replaced. The tank I replaced a few months ago had no access to the bladder other than cutting thru the sheetmetal body.

I knew they (or some of them) were replaceable but for the aggravation, time, etc. I prefer to replace the tank. Yep, it is a hit in the pocket book but...

I replaced mine late last fall and I don't think I could have replaced just the bladder even if it was possible. The brass manifold was so brittle that getting it off destroyed it leaving a twisted off stub in the tank threads. I wound up replacing everything...new manifold, tank, check valve, etc. (which is what I planned to do). Early in the winter I had the pump replaced too. The entire system was original to the house...25+ yrs old. The well pump guy said it was uncommon to get that much use out of a pump. It was clear the pump was in its last legs too.

i got a really good lesson on how pumps and bladder type tanks work this week. a friend of mine has been in that business for 30 years, and i just happen to run into him, while he had some time to talk, so i picked his brain and learned a lot of things. if you go to buy a new bladder type tank, and want one that will last with the least trouble, get the fiberglass type..the air is encapsulated in the bladder, the other 2 main types used in this area, has the water inside the blader, which can cause all sorts of problems.

heehaw that is real good to know ! Did he mention a particular make? Or are they all set up like that. I just replaced the backflow preventer on my other well and that tank is bad with a non replaceable bladder /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

So I guess I should have titled the thread bladder replacement is almost always possible.
