I want to get myself a good book that reviews the basics of welding. I'm thinking more of an instructional book rather than a tech reference book of charts and tables.

Suggestions?

Last time I was in there, Lowes had a pretty good general reference welding book, I think by Finch, that was about $15.

I bet amazon has some as well.

Not sure if Ron Fournier (sp) has one or not, but his metalworking books are top notch.

Seems like HP books was the publisher for many of them.

welding is a skill you need to practise to get good at. Books will only get the basic theory. Biggest issue is how to read the puddle to get good penetration and then move that puddle forward at the correct speed and that goes for OA welding, stick or wirefed or for that matter brazing as well

I like learing from books too and am a general fan of "how-to" books. That being said I recently saw some recommendations for the videos/DVDs at Instructional Welding Videos As has already been mentioned you can't really watch the action of a puddle in a book...

Having that described in detail would go a long way toward beginning the practice properly.

Get the welding videos that Wall Mountain sells on their website

Instructional Welding Videos

Next best thing to taking a welding course. These videos are excellent. They show you what a good weld bead should look like and demonstrate the techniques for proper welding.

After I invested in several books, I noticed my library had some as well. Wish I had started there.
