Jinma 284
Ok I am starting to get something that doest seem right.

Today I tried to start my 284 and it would'nt turn over just clicked a bunch. I got out my battery charger and the charger said the battery was full.

So I removed the battery cables, cleaned them and reinstalled. the tractor was good as new. After about 1 hour of moving some dirt around the battery light came on, then I noticed the light would go off and on.
Watching the amp meter I noticed it would charge for a split second then go back to rest.

I parked the tractor after running for approx 3 hours and checked the battery and it was full.( I have a triton computerized charger that tells me everthing I need to know).

I think the regulator has gone bad. What do you think??

They're cheap, and easy to replace. But maybe you should clean the tractor end of the battery ground cable first. The tractor is usually painted before the electrics are installed. As such, grounds are mediocre to poor - and the solenoid clicking you hear could be due to paint between the ground cable and the tractor frame. It's maybe good enough to permit the battery to accept a low amperage charge, but not always good enough to allow the battery to deliver a full amperage to the starting circuit. Such inconsistencies will show up on the amp gauge as well

Like greg said, pull off the ground wire (block/frame side) clean the base metal/steel. use some good anti corrosion electrical dope under the clamp/bolt so that it maintaines a good connection, while it is off pull the + lead off the starter sol connection (on the starter) do the same with it, use a wire brush to clean the terminal/post, also remove the small red wire that is connected at the SOL too adn clean under it. (start wire from key) all these will help solve the problem, otherwise you may have a cracked cell inside the battery. which I have seen on cars before, works for a wihle then stops working, usually accompanied with an alt light/gauge jump when the alt picks up the load/voltage spike when the plate comes appart... Heat and or viberatino can cause this but more than likely youhave the ground issue.

A similar problem on our Rhino was caused by a poor connection at the ignition switch. It had a good enough connection to do everything but activate the solenoid. Cleaning the connections solved the problem.

Well I am pretty sure its the voltage regulator.

What I did was take 5 ah out of the battery so I knew it had to charge. Once started it would charge but about every second or so it would stop charging then turn back on.

Anyone have a link to a new regulator??

2006 284 jinma. 71 hours. While I am at it I will order some gaskets and filters from the same place.

I have cleaned all the battery cables and places they land and also srayed them the red anti corrision.
I also took apart the starter and tighened all the bolts and studs. I took apart the the crappie electrical connection box clean and tighened and loose wires (I crimped the connectors with a crimping tool).

As far as the Triton it charges the battery fine I can cycle the battery from 10v to 13 volts and it accepts over 10ah. Which is plenty to start the tractor. I know the battery is fine. I cannot tell you what C rating the battery is but it is somewhere in the 4 to 5c rating due to the fact it barely has enough cranking amps to turn the motor over without using the compression lever.

Update on this issue.

I purchased a new battery and new battery connectors. I suspected the battery was unable to give enough current to the starter the start the tractor so I went ahead and replaced the battery (1000 cold cranking amps)and its connectors.

Well that fixed the wierd charging problem however that did not fix the weak starter.
I ordered a new starter from Affordable, I hope that fix's the starting problem.

Edit;
I took apart the solonoid and cleaned all the contacts. I will say after only 80 hours on the tractor I would have thought the contacts would have been in better shape. It was pitted really bad and was black from burnt marks.

Salt water contamination. I would strongly advise you to take apart the new starter/solenoid too. Give both a good cleaning and degreasing, then use fresh lube before reassembly/installation.

One of the most likely reasons for the really bad pitting and black/burnt marks is not enough volts/amp to engage the solenoid and run the starter motor at the same time ........ so that washer is setting there dancing/bounceing while you are hearing all that starter clicking while turning the key.

You will see some pitting/black burnt in what I will say a good starter.

If the ground cable from the battery is still setting on top of black paint ..... clean that to...
