I'm wondering if any of you with the Kubota L3240 could furnish some imput as to the amount of weight I would need for rear ballst. I will be using the loader for moving dirt and stone and general pallet fork work. I was considering using either a 33 gallon or 55 gallon drum filled with concrete they would weight about 600lb or 1000lb.. I am a little concerned that the 55 gallon, 1000lbs, might be a little to much. Thanks for any advice.

Hey Vincie,

I have a L3130. It is the model that your 3240 replaced. Have you thought about filling your rear tires? With the tires filled about 75% you would add about 450lbs per tire. That plus a 500 or 600lb box off the back and I think you would be good.
I don't have my tires filled yet, but I have a Gannon heavy duty box scrapper that wieghs about 1100 lbs. I had a lighter box but I started to crack the welds. Using the bucket I have plenty of ballast. With the quick attatch pallet forks I have to be carefull. It's not a problem when you lift while sitting still. It becomes a problem when you start to move. If you hit a pot hole or a bump, or the ground starts to slope to the side, that's when things can go wrong.

I agree with Gary T - if you are not often crossing finished lawn area then filling the rear tires keeps the ballast weight and CG down low. The negative is once they are filled the weight is always there, even when you don't want it. If you ever get a flat tire you will loose it to.

If you are crossing finished lawn area then either a heavy 3 pt attachment or the 55 gallon drum would work. You can always use the 55 gallon drum and not fill it up all the way to reduce the weight if you are concerned about that. The 1000 lbs should be no issue for a Grand L though.

I have the same tractor and I went with a weight box that I picked up cheap on Craigslist. I use my tractor on finished lawn area so I wanted the ability to drop the weight when it was not needed.

I do have the rear tires filled with rimguard, but the rear ballast would assist with taking some of the bucket load off the front axle and add alittle help with rear traction.

I use a kubota weight box full of 3/4" gravel on my GL3540, its approximately 1000 lbs.

My L3240 has filled rears and I always have either a box blade or 4' bushhog on it. I've carried many full bucket loads of sand with it and never felt that the rear end was going to bounce up off the ground. (72" L 724 loader) R 4's on it too.

It will tear up the lawn if I turn sharp or in 4wd but I'm just careful.
