I've been considering getting some of these Wavian ("NATO") jerry cans - 20litre-red-wavian_6_1_1200x1200_66e66.jpg

They're quite pricey, but from everything I've read I shouldn't have to keep buying new fuel cans every couple of years at ~$30, which spill fuel all over the place thanks to their no-spill spouts (besides only allowing about 0.5gpm of fuel out a).

I've had nozzles fall apart or crack, and seams split, on the plastic cans; I've got a couple old metal jerry cans, one of which has a old-fashions springy flex spout - the spout works, but it's inside the can so you have to twist it open, which becomes impossible after temperature and pressure change; besides, the venting always ends up leaking some diesel for me. The old jerry can I've got with a plastic nozzle also has the nozzle in the can (you pull it out flip it around and make a mess before you can use it) and it's one of those stupid spring-loaded nozzles again.

Supposedly, the wavian cans are fully welded, and have positive closure, and their fuel actually flows out of the nozzles at a respectable rate without glugging.

Anyone out there have one or more of these? I'm not asking about the price and don't care to hear about how stupid it is to buy a fuel can that expensive - I prefer to buy things that will last so I don't waste hours and make messes with cruddy equipment later, and then have to pay to replace, so replacing a leaky plastic can with another $30 piece of junk is false economy - if there's a substantially better product.

I have a modern one of a different brand ( $20 ) and its my second favorite can. My VP racing cans are my favorite. I like the plastic cans because they don't scratch the hood dragging it across it. As far as the metal can is concerned they don't leak when turned over in the back of the truck and flow at a decent rate. Same for the VP race cans.

I wish they'd put more handles on these cans so you can easily hold them when they are tilted or inverted.

WoW!!! I checked out the Wavian web site - all I can say is - - this sure makes the four WWll Jerry cans I have a lot more valuable.

What are you doing to have to replace the plastic cans? I still have some that are 30 years old. You know, the ones that came with a vent.

If you are stuck with the new fangled cans go to Tractor Supply and get the spout/vent kits they sell and modify them. They have both small and diesel size spout kits.

I've purchased an number of 20L, 10L, and 5L cans from Atlantic British direct on their site. After you buy the vented nozzle they seem to be similar in price to the Wavian cans you are asking about. I've never purchased the Wavians, they may be the exact same can. I just know their are a lot of poorly made, similar looking, NATO style cans out there that are not lined, have thinner, poorly welded or even seamed metal. but I can tell you for sure the Atlantic British ones are legitimate. Solid, well constructed, don't leak, durable paint, and are coated on the inside. Every time I fill my tractor up with diesel I sit a funnel in place, use no nozzle, (the small formed spout on the can itself is very easy to aim). I'll MT 5 gallons into the tractor in 30 seconds. and never spill a drop. But for things that are not direct line of site for a simple funnel, the vented nozzles work just fine, They pour much much faster than any safety nozzle I've tried, I've had no dripping issues from the nozzle clamps either. They are just as durable as the can itself, with no springs or moving parts other than the swinging clamp. Got all mine 5 years ago and handle them a few times per week. Aside from being dirty, they are like new.

I have some 25+ year old VP style plastic race jugs too. They're simple and indescructable. They're technically illegal in California now but I've not had a problem filling them.

Our power was off a lot this winter so I got some more gas cans to keep the generator going, this time some No-Spill cans. The cans themselves are as sturdy as the old race jugs. The spout's more complicated due to the button and flow valve but you'd have to bang them around to break them. And replacements are readily available. The No-spill cans pour slower than the race jugs but unless you're using them for a pit stop it's not a problem. They spill less gas when pouring and leak less gas fumes when sitting.

I like them enough that I bought a diesel one for the tractor and a small one for saw gas. The race jugs are demoted to emergency use.
