I just took delivery of a new tractor John Deere 3720 with a front loader and backhoe yesterday.
I now have 10 hours on it and it is time to grease her up.
I just came back from the auto parts store and they recomended waterproof green grease, it was $8 a tube and is a NLGI grade 2 multi-purpose synthetic polymer grease.
I was told i can this on all fitting on my tractor and it is ok to mix with other grease.
it also claims to last UP TO 8 times longer than regular grease ( maybe but i doubt it )
my question is has anybody used this grease and is it ok ( recomended ) to start using on a new machine?
thanks in advance.
I will wait to install and use the tractor for now.

When using that grease make sure you are wearing gloves...it's a bear to get off your skin !

so it sound like it is fine to use in all of my grease fittings correct?
thanks for the quick replies and the tip on the gloves

I would forget everything the auto parts store told you and dump the green grease. I suspect it is a very high profit item for them.

Instead, go back to your JD dealer and get HD lithium complex grease with moly. It comes in a gray tube and should be around $3.50 give or take. It is messy so don't get it on your clothes. The moly will help minimize wear of the grease points on your FEL and backhoe. The HD lithium complex is the most common type of grease base and is highly compatible (you can also get JD HD lithium grease without moly for grease points that don't see extreme pressure; however moly has no real disadvantage except a slightly higher price). You could also use the green "SD Polyurea" that JD uses as the factory grease, but if you read JD's own specs the HD lithium greases (with or without moly) spec out better in most ways.

I have found that the JD brand greases cost the same or less than almost any other brand I've seen, few of which are nearly as respectable (like TSC store brand). I also have noticed that the JD dealers sell grease by the caseload to local farmers who earn their living from farming. I doubt they would skimp on grease if it would add any risk to the operation of their 20-30+ year old tractors and combines.

If you want to spend as much money as possible and get the truly best grease, read the various other posts and pay attention to Dieselpower. You may find slightly better grease than the JD stuff I note above, but it will cost a multiple as much. IMHO greasing every 10 hours without fail with the JD grease (or an equal quality grease from another brand) is the best thing you can do, and spending more on fancy greases will make very little difference. My views might differ if you were operating a 50-ton piece of earthmoving machinery in a quarry, but not for anything you can do with a 3720. I would never go with longer intervals just because the third-party grease maker says you can. Also, unless you're working in standing water or Noah's Ark type rainfall, I wouldn't worry about waterproof greases but instead just make sure you grease on the JD schedule.

I bought a tube of green grease when my tractor was new. As soon as I learned a bit about greases I tossed it. First of all, no moly. Second of all, not EP rated. May be fine for auto uses but I wouldn't let it touch my FEL or BH. Finally, saying "$8/tube" and "best value" should set off alarms. That would make it just about the most expensive over-the-counter grease available. Synthetic is not an advantage when talking about greases and is more of a marketing ploy.

I tried several different greases. Then I tried the TRC C&C 880 and can't see myself using anything else.

Here's a compromise.

Loader and backhoe pins and 3 pt. hitch pins and ball joints are relatively exposed to dust, dirt, and weed seeds. Grease of any color will become contaminated pretty quickly. Grease these joints often with cheap moly grease.

Steering joints, U-joints, etc. are better protected. If you want to use an expensive grease, use it on those joints.

I used to keep one grease gun loaded with cheap grease, and another loaded with the good stuff, but now I just use moly grease and grease everything whenever I grease anything.

Based on posts by DieselPower I was looking for a grease that had a high Timken rating and the Green Grease is the only thing I found locally that met that requirement.. I emailed the company and found out that the 'mixed complex' base is a lithium base - so it is compatible with a lot of other greases

From looking at their website spec sheets it appears that it is EP rated - but maybe I am looking at something differently...

Here is a link to JD grease options and specs:
https://jdparts.deere.com/partsmkt/document/english/pmac/8180_fb_GreaseSpecialMultiPurpose.htm

The HD lithium greases have a Timken Ok load of at least 60lb while green grease claims an OK load of 80 lb. I have no way to check the green grease claims. All other specs are indistinguishable, although green grease certainly has the good ol' ad hype going. Reminds me a lot of Slick 50 and the like sort of products.

It's odd that green grease advertises "mixed complex" when they later say it's lithium complex, a standard term in the grease world that makes it far easier to know what you're getting (and also tells you that it isn't all that special). Again, looks like ad hype to me.

I expect green grease is OK but I still doubt it will make any meaningful difference compared to a quality grease from someone else like JD, Lucas, or Citgo.
